BURNAP, Robert
Little Robert Burnap, the 7-year-old son of Virgil A. and Linda Fout, died at 7:30 o'clock, June 1, 1913, at his home near Purgittsville. The cause of his death, though under the care of skillful local doctors and eminent physicians of Washington, D. C., could not be ascertained until after the Great Physician took him as his own. An examination by Drs. Wright and Babb revealed the cause to have been the improper work of the gall ducts, and no medical aid could have saved him. The sudden departure of the little jewel was a crushing blow to his parents and all that were near to him, and the weight of sorrow with which they are burdened, our Heavenly Father and time can only alleviate. The great love for the child was manifested by the beautiful floral tributes from those who knew him. Rev. George Burgess, assisted by Rev. Yost conducted the funeral services at 2:30 o'clock, June 2, after which the little body was laid to rest in the home burial ground. Struck as his train entered the Kingwood tunnel of the B&O railroad, near Tunnelton, yesterday morning, E. J. Burton, a brakeman, was instantly killed. Burton was front brakeman on the westbound freight train and left his companions in the engine cab a few minutes before the tunnel was reached. When he did not return to the engine the fireman became anxious as to his safety and went on the train to look for him. Just before reaching Thornton, the fireman found Burton, stretched out on one of the box cars, lying face downward in a pool of blood. He was dead when the fireman reached him. Burton was 23 years old. He had been with the company but a short while, coming to Cumberland from Philadelphia, where he leaves a wife. His body was tattooed from head to foot, and a large number of curious persons called at Undertaker McCabe’s in Grafton to see the curious markings. BUSH, Michael
Michael Bush aged 65, of Ocean, of this county, was found dead this morning at the Home of Reuben Eaton on Wineow street. Investigation by the County Coroner resulted In the conclusion that death was due to natural causes. Bush had been a sufferer from miner’s-asthma and according to Eaton, and others had been drinking. Eaton said he took the man off the streets at 2 o'clock this morning while Bush was intoxicated and put him to bed in his home. Bush, apparently all right, arose after several hours and went to the place of Thomas Litten adjoining and ate breakfast. He then returned to Eaton's quarters. His money, $19.60 and his watch had not been disturbed. Bush was fairly well dressed and he wore the button of the United Mine Workers. According to Eaton, Bush had been making periodical visits to that section for the last 10 years. He would come well-dressed, gradually spend his earnings and then return to the mines in overalls to work, only to repeat the visits when he had acquired another pay for his labor. Bush was a bachelor and lived alone following the death of Dolly Kenney, a relative with whom he boarded. He was outside mine laborer. A brother, Michael Bush, was killed in a mine accident at Ocean, with three others, some years ago. Peter Bush, brother, is a mine foreman at Ocean. BYERS, Will
SHEPHERDSTOWN - By a strange coincidence, the large pyramidal Norway pine, planted by Mr Will Byers thrifty-five years ago at Valley Rest, near town, withered and died the last fall season at the same time he passed away. This tree had been his special pride, and often he recounted that he had planted and taken care of it. Its decay and removal takes away one of the finest ornaments of that country place. -Shepherdstown Register Keyser Tribune, October 11, 1912 (Courtesy of Patti McDonald) Posted July 30, 2010
