PENGELLY

Cornish: habitation name so called from corn. pen head, top, end + kelly (mutated gelly) copse, grove.

The patriarchs of the Pengelly family of Eckhart Mines, Allegany County, Maryland came from the County of Cornwall, England.

Hannibal Pengelly was born 1818 in Mandron, Cornwall.  He married Mary Ann Rowe of Cornwall who was born 1820.  They were married October 29, 1841*. They had these children who were born in Cornwall:

John Rowe b.1843** d. May 29, 1895 USA
Hannibal Rowe Sr. b.1845** d.1880 USA
Mary Ann b.1848** d. unknown** USA

Hannibal died in March of 1847 before the birth of his daughter Mary Ann.  On the spring 1851 census of Perranuthnoe Parish** Mary Ann age 29 show her alone with children; John Rowe age 8, Honibal [sic,Hannibal] age 5 and Mary Ann age 3.

On June 30, 1851 the Perranuthnoe church records* show that Mary Ann Pengelly, widow, daughter of Alexander Rowe*** married William Symons, son of William Symons.  From this union a son William Rowe Symons was b. August 8, 1853 in Cornwall.

Note: the information from the Perranuthone Parish Church & census records was graciously provided to me by a Mr. A. Kline from the UK.

This new family of Symons/Pengelly left Cornwall for America.  What year and to which state they first settled I have not located the information yet.  They were found on the 1860 Allegany census for the town of Clarysville.  Sadly Mary Ann (Pengelly) Symons now spelled Simon is once again alone with her 3 sons.  Her daughter Mary Ann Pengelly, age 12, was located staying with another family in Clarsyville.

Hannibal Rowe Sr. married a Scottish girl Elizabeth Walkenshaw January 17, 1865 in Allegany Co., Maryland.*  All of their children were born and buried in Eckhart Mines, Allegany County, Maryland they were:

Jennet b.1865** d. 1931
Mary Ann b. May 22, 1868** d. Feb, 25, 1945 m. Isaac Fredrick Crowe.    CROWE
Catherine b. June 1870** d. Oct. 17, 1918
Hannibal Jr. b. 1872** d. 1918
Margaret (Maggie) b. abt.1876** d. 1936

Hannibal Rowe Pengelly, Sr. died before the 1880 census but was verified on the 1860 census with his wife and 3 eldest daughters.

William Rowe Symons (half brother to Pengelly child) married, had three daughters** and was tragically killed in a mine accident in 1888.***
