HODEL, Charles (abridged)

Charles Hodel, publisher of The Raleigh Register and the Beckley Post-Herald and founder of Beckley Newspapers Corp., died at 1:45 p.m. Saturday in the Raleight General Hospital.  He was 84. The prominent newspaperman and civic leader had been hospitalized since suffering a stroke on Feb. 5, 1965 and had been unable to communicate with family and friends since that time.  The body was cremated later Saturday afternoon, according to his wishes, at the Keyser-Bryant Crematorium.  The Ohio native, who became a West Virginian by adoption in 1912, was credited for much of this coal-rich area's development.  His adopted state of West Virginia will be forever in his debt.  Born of Swiss immigrant parents, Elizabeth (Zimmerman) Hodel and John Hodel, in New Philadelphia, Ohio, on Jan 13, 1889, he first came to West Virginia at the age of 18 as a salesman of books and patent medicines.  His experience was brief, however, and at the end of 10 months Hodel returned to the printing field in which he had served an apprenticeship in Ohio. Since becoming managing editor of The Register in 1912, Hodel's influence has been felt almost everywhere in the newspaper's circulation area and far beyond it.  Recognized as an outstanding West Virginia conservationist, Hodel began an editorial drive toward the practice of conservation in the slashed hardwood forests of West Virginia more than 40 years ago. Hodel has been called the "father of the Southern Soil Conservation District" and was a leader in introducing the Rural Development Council to the area. Outstanding in a lengthy list of successful projects he has espoused are the Raleigh County Memorial Airport, New River Park, and the Beckley Municipal Parking Lot. Highly respected, even though his views were not always popular, Hodel's advocacy of industrial diversification is now widely accepted and he has been in the center of numerous efforts to bring new industry to the area. As early as 1919 he crusaded for establishment of a Chamber of Commerce and served a term as its president. As chairman of the Chamber's Airport Committee, he was instrumental in bringing flight facilities to the area, first with the Beckley-Mount Hope Airport........continues (pg 3) with more accomplishents.

HOFF, Glendon L.
LEASE, Frederick G.
SKELLY, Wiliam

Three Dead After Plane Crash Here
Three men are dead as the result of the first airplane crash in the immediate vicinity of Cumberland, which occurred late yesterday afternoon when the Challenger biplane operated by Wm. M. Skelly, 23, plunged to the ground while taking off from the Maryland airport on the McMullen Highway. It was Skelly's birthday. The dead are: William M. Skelly, Cresaptown, owner and pilot of the plane, who died at 7:35 p. m. in Allegany Hospital. Glendon L. Hoff, 24, of 722 Hill Top drive, who died in the hospital at 10:10 p. m. Frederick G. Lease, 33, of 214 Fulton street, who was dead when pulled from the machine. According to witnesses, the plane had just taken off and had traveled but about 500 yards when Skelly put the ship into a vertical bank, from which it went into a side slip and then into a nose dive. The plane crashed into a field on the Barton farm and burst into flames. The pilot and Hoff were thrown clear, but Lease was caught in the wreckage. Skelly and Hoff ran from the machine, their clothes blazing. Hoff collapsed after he had run into a barbed wire fence. Skelly ran toward the Baltimore and Ohio railroad track but collapsed in a gully. Both had attempted to beat out their flaming clothing.
George Barton witnessed the crash and ran to the scene. Aided by his brother, Ferman Barton, N. S. Yoder of Pinto and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Summerfield, he placed the pilot and Hoff in his car and took them to Allegany Hospital. Both were so badly burned that their deaths were expected momentarily. Their clothing was burned from their bodies and Skelly's face was badly battered.
Dr. Joseph P. Franklin, county and deputy state health officer, and Officer S. E. Phillips of the Maryland State Police arrived a few minutes after the crash. Dr. Franklin discovered that Lease was still in the burning plane. He took a tire cover - from his car and wrapping it about Lease, pulled him from the ship. Lease was burned to a crisp and dead. At the hospital Skelly was attended by Dr. James T. Johnson, Sr., and James T. Johnson, Jr. Hoff was attended by Dr. G. C. Blake. Hoff knew that he was dying and said goodbye to friends who called at the hospital. He was delirious when Floyd Jenkins and John ("Boots") Sapp came to see him. He said he wanted his collar loosened and when he felt that the end was near said, "Well, goodbye boys, I'm going." Hoff was perhaps the best known of the trio. He was formerly a sergeant and front guide in Company G, First Infantry, Maryland National Guard. He was regarded as a good soldier and was well liked by fellow members of the company.
An investigation was started immediately by State's Attorney William A. Huster and other county authorities as well as Officer Philips. No inquest was deemed necessary. The body of Lease was not identified for several hours. Keys found near his body fitted the door to his room at the home of Hugh Stevenson, 214 Fulton street, where he boarded, and this garage. Skelly was one of perhaps a score of local aviators. He had been instructed in flying by William J. Johnson and Walter A. Coughenour, also local pilots. He purchased the plane April a year ago, and had over 200 hours of solo flying to his credit. He had a students' pilot's license.
The crash was the worst in the history of the Cumberland area. Two U. S. Army fliers were burned to death more than a year ago when their plane crashed into the side of Little Savage Mountain, and another was killed a short time later, when he crashed at the intersection of the National Highway and the Meyersdale road. Both crashes were due to fog. Two Army fliers were injured, though not seriously, when a bombing plane crashed on the Baltimore and Ohio tracks near Roberts Station, several years ago.
The field from which the plane took off was one of two near the city. It was opened last year by Harold W. Krimm and operated throughout the summer. An air circus, featured by the stunt flying of three Marine Corps fliers, was held there under the auspices of the local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Local pilots differed as to the cause of the crash. It was said that the plane was in first class shape, but one pilot said this morning that he had flown it a little over two months ago, at which time a piston in the 90-horsepower Curtis OX motor had broken and cracked a cylinder. He said that he was able to make a forced landing and advised Skelly to rebuild the motor. He added that he understood that a new cylinder and piston had been fitted but that the motor had not been rebuilt and was not turning up sufficient revolutions to be considered air-worthy. A Department of Commerce inspector is expected here today to investigate the crash and the above facts will be given him.
All three men were married and had children. The pilot is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Skelly, and seven small children. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 9 a. m. from St. Ambrose's Catholic Church, Cresaptown. Lease is survived by his wife, Mrs. Edith Lease, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Reuben B. Lease, and by two small children. Surviving also are four brothers, Arlie T., Richard T., Mason and Frank Lease, and two sisters, Mrs. Clarence E. McKenzie and Miss Harriet Lease. Funeral services will be held at 9 a. m. tomorrow from the Cresaptown M. E. Church, with burial in the family plot at Dawson. Hoff is survived by his wife and one daughter, Nancy, by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Hoff; by three brothers, Robert A., Roy R., and Russell E., and by three sisters, Mrs. C F. Rice, Mrs. Charles Zimmerman and Miss Mildred Hoff. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. tomorrow from the home, 722 Hill Top Drive, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, the Rev. H. Hall Sharp officiating.
George Barton and Firman Barton, on whose farm the airport is located, were badly burned about the hands in tearing the few remnants of buring clothing from Hoff and Skelly. The two men with Richard Summerfield saw the plane crash and were about 250 feet from the spot. They immediately started toward and were within fifty feet of the blazing ship when Hoff and Skelly emerged from it, groping blindly through the smoke and flames. Unable to reach Lease who was pinned in the cock-pit, the trio chased after Skelly and Lease and tore the burning clothing from them. The Bartons, who are brothers, suffered burns about the hands. Hoff had run along the fence and pieces of flesh were pulled from his body by the barbed wire. All his clothing except portions about his belt and shoes, were burned away. Skelly, whose eyes were burned out, ran a short distance from the plane and fell into a gully where the Bartons tried to aid him in whatever way they could. Summerfield, who is a World War veteran of this area, advanced the opinion that the men did not free themselves from plane but were dropped out when the bottom of the cockpit had burned away.

HOFFMAN, George

Died in this place on Monday Evening last, after a protracted illness, George Hoffman, Esq., in the 81st year of his age. Mr. Hoffman was one of the few remaining links that bind the past with the present, in Cumberland.  Four or five of his early comrades only remain.  Truly our fathers have been gathered to their fathers - and say younger Brethren have sought for themselves new homes in the far west - leaving the place of their nativity to the care of the stranger. - D. HOFFMAN, Rev. Henry

The Rev. Henry Hoffman died at his home in Keyser Jan. 12, 1892 at the age of 77 years, 7 months and 15 days. The following tribute to his memory is from the KEYSER TRIBUNE:

Rev Henry Hoffman is dead. With sincere regret the entire community hailed this sad intelligence. He passed peacefully away last Tuesday after a brief illness. Of his life a host of good things might be said and but little evil. Such was the life of this upright and pious man that his influence and acquaintance was felt like a benediction. We can say but little of him but what is already known and nothing that will add to his laurels. Rev Hoffman was twenty-one years of age when he was united with the church and gave his life to the cause of the gospel. In 1841, he joined the Baltimore conference under which he labored for nineteen years when he was by reason of failing health put upon the superannuated list. In Keyser, where he located 25 years ago he has made himself a strong support in the church and Sabbath school and his vacant place will be indeed hard to fill. His class in Sabbath school was his great pride and anxiety. From it his pallbearers were selected. The funeral took place Thursday and the body laid to rest in the cemetery. Rev Rumsey Smithson of Winchester, Va, pronounced the sermon. He left a loving wife, his helpmate through years of toil and two sons, Dr C. S. of this place and Dr O. H. of Thomas.

HOGAN, Thomas

The Disaster at Westernport - Further Particulars
The two men, Messrs Thomas Hogan (not Mullan as erroneously reported by our Daily) and Thomas Moran, killed by the boiler explosion at Westernport on Tuesday were buried according to the rites of the Catholic Church in the cemetery of that denomination in Westernport Wednesday.  At the time of the explosion, the engineer had his hand on the throttle of the engine and was in the act of starting from the yard.  The indicator marked 105 pounds according to the dying statement of Mr Hogan who lived in great agony three hours after receiving his injuries.  The explosion threw him with sufficient force against the front of Kildow's Hall to damage the framework of the building.  Portions of his clothing were afterward found sticking to the front wall and marking the point of contact between his person and the house.  He leaves a wife and one child in Piedmont, W Va.
The fireman, Thomas Moran, was an unmarried man.  He was thrown high in the air and falling downward came in contact with a fence over which his brains were scatted in all directions.  Kildow's Hall, the building nearest on one side of the railroad, was considerably racked.  The windows were demolished and the furniture of the Lodge Room badly damaged, the most of it being ruined by water, steam and fragments of the engine and boiler.  The charts, pictures and etc of the different orders (we understand that seven different associations and secret societies used the room) were almost utterly ruined while the plaster was knocked down from the ceiling and walls in many places.  The first floor which is used as a store was very little injured, the goods only suffering a considerable shaking up from the concussion.  The Nesbitt residence, on an eminence about twenty-five yards above the railroad, and opposite Kildow's Hall was much injured by a piece of the exploded boiler  which pierced the front wall.  Greater damage would have been done but for the porch, which broke the effect of the missle.  Among the many narrow escapes recorded is that of two little children in a house adjoining Nesbitt property.  They had been looking from a window, and were called away a few moments before the explosion by their mother and just in time to escape a heavy fragment of the boiler which entered the window alluded to and passed through the house. The scene immediately after the disaster was photographed by a Piedmont artist.  The wreck has been entirely removed and the injured buildings are fast undergoing repair.

HOLLIDAY, Isaac

CUMBERLAND MD, OCT 11 -   Isaac Holliday of Paw Paw W Va, was killed on the B&O railroad early this morning. A section of train No 31, which passed Paw Paw about daylight, had the dead body of the young man on the pilot of the engine. The crew knew nothing of the death until the train stopped at Okonoko. Holliday was a telegraph lineman, and the presumption is that he was on duty when the train came upon him. He was 23 years old and a son of John Holliday. A sister, Mrs. Sallie Holliday, lives in Cumberland.

HOLZEN, Miss Mary Gertrude

WOMAN LEAPS TO HER DEATH ~ Body of Miss Mary Holzen Taken from River ~ MET DEATH BY DROWNING.
Hunters This Morning Discovered the Body of a Woman Floating in the River Near the Blue Bridge—All Attempts to Resusitate Her Failed.
The dead body of Miss Mary Holzen, a maiden lady aged about 51 years, was taken from thg Potomac river at the West Virginia bridge, about 6 o clock this morning. While no one saw the woman so far as learned at the bridge prior to the discovery of her body in the water, she is presumed to have leaped into the river from the bridge. About the hour referred to Mr. William McDermott was on his way to the home of Mr. Andy Minke, the latter residing near the bridge. when Mr. McDermott saw an object in the water, near to and about the middle of the bridge. What Mr. McDermott saw proved afterwards to have been the face of the woman, but he at first thought it was a duck and called to Mr. Mlnke to hurry up The two men were about to shoot, but after throwing a stone at the object, and the latter failing to notice it, Mr. McDermott got a boat and rowed out into the river, and was horrifled at finding the body of a woman, the onlv portion of which was visible from the shore, strange to say, was the face. Her dress no doubt caused the body to float. With the assistance of Mr. Robert Reed, engineer at the water works the body was taken ashore and Drs. Koon and White summoned, but all efforts to resuscitate the same failed. Mr. McDermott thinks he heard the woman moan when he first reached the body, which was later taken in charge by Undertaker Louis Stein.
Got Breakfast.
Miss Holzen lived with her two sisters, Misses Anna and Lizzie Holzen, and one brother, Mr. Henry Holzen, at 97 North Centre street. She arose early and got breakfast. After preparing the meal and placing it unon the table she must have left the house because she was not seen by any one when they appeared at the breakfast table. She was seen walking down North Mechanic street about 5 o'clock, presumably on her way to the river. The deceased was a daughter of the late Anthony Holzen, the well known blacksmith, who died about three vears ago. Beside the brother and sisters mentioned above. Miss Holzen leaves two other brothers, John, residing in this city, and George, residing in Pittsburgh. Miss Holzen, if as is supposed, she took her own life, she did so, while her mind was temporarily unbalanced.  She lived happily with the rest of the family and having been left ample means by her father, had no cause to worry, hence could have had no desire to end her life. Miss Holzen was most highly respected and the sad occurrence has caused much sympathy to be expressed for those who are distressed over the untimely end of the deceased. Acting Coroner Justice Jacob B. Humbird viewed the remains andafter learning the facts, deemed an inquest unnecessary.

HOLZEN, Miss Mary Gertrude

TRIBUTE OF RESPECT ~ To the Memory of Miss Mary Gertrude Holzen, Who Died Nov. 17, 1905.
The people of our city were shocked and hearts saddened on last Friday morning to hear of the sudden death of Miss Mary Holzen, daughter of the late Anthony[sic, Anton] Holzen. We say sudden because it came very unexpectedly, even though she had been in poor health for several years, yet not considered in a critical condition even by those most closely associated with her, as she was able to be around all the time and was engaged in her daily duties. She mysteriously strayed from her home unobserved and was found later floating in the river.  All that loving hearts and hands could do to restore her was of no avail.  Her spirit had already flown back to the God who gave it. Miss Mary was quiet and unassuming, possessed of a timid disposition, yet courageous for the cause of right.  She was a devout member of SS. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church, and lived faithful in her vows; always at the post of duty unless detained by some cause that would stand the test in the day of final judgment. Her Christian character and practices all through life were such as endeared her to those familiar with her, and brought her their esteem and kindly regard. The funeral services were conducted from SS. Peter and Paul's Church yesterday, Nov. 20, 1905, and were largely attended.  The many beautiful floral tributes place by loving hands showed the esteem of her friends.  A solemn high requeim mass was sung by Father Mathias, assisted by Father Dominic and a ???? deacon. The pallbearers were as follows:  Messrs. Wm. Mertens?, Henry W. Graber, Chas. Sanders, Robert Birmingham, Andrew Fesenmeir, Geo. Glick?, Hanson Seifers and Richard Coyle. Sympathy of the entire community goes out to the sisters and brothers in their late bereavement.  It is a time when words fail and the pen falters to express our thoughts, and I commend them to Him who doeth all things well, and who only can give true comfort and whose grace is sufficient at all times. ---- A FRIEND
