WOLFE, Lewis W.

Over Exertion On Fishing Trip Fatal to Lewis W. Wolfe ~ Veteran of Civil War and B. & O. Service, Dies at age of 86. Attended S. S. 76 Years
Death removed from Connellsville another of its oldest and most prominent citizens when Lewis W. Wolfe, 86 years old, a member of the Baltimore & Ohio Veterans Association and a veteran of the Civil War, succumbed to an illness due to the imfirmities of old age, Wednesday night at 10 o’clock at the family home, 208 Lincoln avenue. Mr. Wolfe was taken ill Sunday evening, April 17. Friday, April 15, marked the opening of the trout season and Mr. Wolfe, all his life an ardent angler, went on a fishing excursion to Bear Run. He came home in the evening and decided to make another visit to the stream Saturday. The exertion proved too much for a man of his years and he collapsed and had been bedfast since. He would rally at times but very little hope was entertained for his recovery. He suffered a sinking spell on Saturday night but later a slight improvement was noticed in ihis condition. Heart failure was the immediate cause of his death. Up until his late illness Mr. Wolfe had enjoyed good health and was unusually active for a man of his advanced years. Mr. Wolfe was born at Brandonville, W. Va., April 19, 1835, and two days following the onset of his last illness he attained the ripe old age of 86 years. Of late years it had been the custom of the William F. Kurtz Post No. 104, Grand Army of the Republic, to celebrate the anniversary of Mr. Wolfe’s birth with a party, but on account of his illness there was no celebration this year. Mr. Wolfe came to Connellsville from Graton, W. Va., about 48 years ago and shortly afterward was made superintendent of water stations of the Baltimore & Ohio railroad, which position he held until 10 years ago, when he retired. Mr. Wolfe married Miss Malinda Casteel who died in 1905. He was a devout member of the First Presbyterian church for many years and was an active worker in various organizations for the church. He was an elder for 40 years, holding the office at the time of his death. He was a regular attendent at Sunday school for 76 years, teaching a class of boys. He was present on the Sunday he was taken ill. Mr. Wolfe was a member of the Masonic lodge of Grafton, W. Va. At various times he had held offices in William F. Kurtz Post and declined the nomination for an office at the last regular election of the post. In politics Mr. Wolfe was a staunch Republican and at the time of his death was assessor of the Fifth ward. Surviving are the following children: Miss Ida Wolfe, at home; Mrs. J. L. Kurtz, Connellsville; Mrs. Robert H. Craig, Pittsburg, and Harry C. Wolfe, Petersburg, Va.; one brother, Josiah Wolfe, Cranesville, W. Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Julia Lewis, Oakland, Md., and Mrs. Lydia Falkner, of near Hazelton, Pa.; seven grandchildren and four great grand-children also survive. During the Civil War Mr. Wolfe enlisted July 30, 1864, in Company F, 17th Regiment, West Virginia Infantry. He was discharged in 1865.

WOLFE, Stephen

Newburg, W. Va., April 30. ~ Injury Fatal to Youth
Little more than five hours after a train hurled him to the tracks when he tried to get aboard as it sped through Newburg, Stephen (Junior) Wolfe, 17, died in the City hospital at Grafton. At 1 o'clock yesterday morning an emergency operation was performed by Drs. Dorsey C. Peck and Paul P. Warden. The youth's skull was badly fractured above his eyes. He had been unconscious from the time he was hurt and did not regain consciousness. He died about 4:45 o'clock. Wolfe had attended a dance in a Newburg hall and went straightway to the tracks, where a fast west-bound freight was passing. He tried to gain a foothold, but was hurled between tracks. Another train passbefore Wolfe's friends could reach him. It was first believed that he was dead, but at an undertaking establishment it was found that he was still living. His death, however, was expected. A nurse said the skull fracture was the ony extensive injury. The youth is survived by his father, Cecil Wolfe, Lyons district, Prston county, farmer, who was at the bedside when death occurred.

The deceased was born July 28, 1849, on the farm of his late father, Adam S. Wolford, and resided there during his life time; becoming the owner of the palce soon after arriving at manhood. Wolford, who resides at Gravel Pit, and Mrs. Howard L. Bohn of Rainsburg. The deceased's second wife was Mary J. Bowser, who, with the following children, survives him: Mrs. Jasper Luman of Hyndman, Mrs. Charles Beals, Elnora May and Robert J., all of whom reside at home. Haviland, were held Thursday at Lybarger Lutheran church at Madley, where a large concourse of relatives and friends had assembled. The remains were interred in the beautiful cemetery adjoining.

He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and had been a prominent figure in the Knights of Labor when that organization flourished in this region. WOTRING, W. W.

SON WAS SAVED ~ FATHER DROWNED ~ W. W. Wotring Lost His Life Trying To Save His Boy ~ Father Couldn't Swim
This afternoon while two of Mr. Wotring's little sons were bathing one of them got beyond his depth, Father Drowned. There was an extremely sad drowning accident at two o'clock this afternoon in the Potomac River at Sandy Bottom, opposite Evitt's Creek aqueduct, a father having drowned trying to save his little son. It appears that Earl and Carl, two little sons of W. W. Wotring, who conducted a little store on Race Street in South Cumberland, were in the river bathing, while the father of the boys was seated on the bank of the river watching them. It happened that Carl got into water over his head. Mr. Wotring, who could not swim, but fearing his little son would drown, started to wade to where his son was struggling in the water, when all at once the father slipped into water over his head. In the mean time H. S. Wotring, a B & O yard brakeman, at Keyser, who happened to be near, and witnessing what was taking place, went to the rescue of the drowning father and son and while he succeeded in saving the boy, the father drowned before his brother could return from placing the boy on the bank. At a late hour this afternoon the body of the drowned man had not been recovered. He leaves a family of five children and a wife and was 38 years of age. The accident caused considerable excitement as the drowned man was highly respected.

Body Recovered Later- The body has been recovered. It was taken in charge by Undertaker Stein and will be removed to the morgue. The wife is said to be nearly prostrated from the shock.
