BRACE, Dr. Charles H.
DEATH COMES SUDDENLY TO DR CHARLES H BRACE ~ Prominent in Community Life Along Many Lines for Over Half a Century
Dr. Charles H. Brace, 73 years old, for fifty years a practicing physician and surgeon in Cumberland, died suddenly at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his home, 125 Bedford street. He had been in poor health for the last year, and had been bedfast for several months, but in recent weeks had recovered sufficiently to leave his room and spend a few hours in the office. While walking in the hallway of his home yesterday he was suddenly stricken and death followed immediately. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Edith Dilley Brace. From 1879 when he began to practice his profession in Cumberland, Dr. Brace was actively identified with many phases of community welfare. From 1880 to 1895 he was a pension examiner for the United States government, served as county physician a number of terms, and as city health officer, thirty years ago, working unceasingly for community health during the time he held office. For years he was surgeon for West Virginia Central and Pittsburgh Railway, the Georges Creek and Cumberland Railway and later the Western Maryland Railroad. From 1880 to 1886 he was a surgeon in the Maryland National Guard, attached to the Second Battalion, at Cumberland. He was an ardent supporter of sports, and was president of the Cumberland Baseball Association in 1891-94 and contributed liberally for its financing, as well as the local fairs and race meets in years past. In his general practice as a physician and surgeon Dr. Brace was most charitable and generous. He gave liberally of his time and medical skill to all who sought it, especially the poor and distressed, without thought of compensation. He aided materially toward the erection of the Western Maryland Hospital and continued [as] a member of its staff since it opened for patients. Dr. Brace was born in Westernport, the son of William and Susan C. Stafford Brace. His father, a native of England, was a civil and mining engineer and was employed on the building of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad from Cumberland west to Grafton, W.Va. Dr. Brace attended the Allegany County Academy, and studied engineering, mapping and surveying. He mapped out Cumberland with its first water and sewer systems. He began the study of medicine under Dr. James A. Fechtig, in 1872 and attended Hahnemannn Medical College at Philadelphia, where he graduated in 1877. He took post-graduate courses in surgery at Jefferson Medical College, in Philadelphia, and also specialized in gynecology and diseases of children. He was a member of several medical societies including the Allegany County Medical Association. Dr. Brace in his spare intervals participated in the social, fraternal and constructive life of the community. He was a pioneer member of Cumberland Lodge No. 63, B. P. O. Elks, Cumberland Aerie, No. 245, Fraternal Order of Eagles and Cumberland Lodge, No. 271, Loyal Order of the Moose. He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Dr. Brace's oldest brother William Brace, was a member of the local bar, and later until his death a prominent attorney of Chicago, Ill. Another brother Harry was a newspaper man in St. Louis until his death, while a third brother Theodore was a wholesale clothier of St. Louis, Mo. until his death in 1918. Funeral services for Dr. Brace will be held at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon from his home, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

LAWYER FREEZES TO DEATH ~ Body of William Brace Is Found in Snow Near His Residence ~ DISCOVERY BY A NEWSBOY. ~ Indications Are That He Was Stunned by a Fall and Perished.
A news boy on his early morning route in Highland Park yesterday came across the body of William Brace, a member of the law firm of Defrees, Brace & Ritter, frozen stiff in the snow within fifty yards of his residence. There were no evidences of foul play and a theory that Mr. Brace, while on his way home late the previous evening, had been stunned by a fail upon the slippery sidewalk and had succumbed to the cold, was supported by the verdict of a coroner's jury. Mr. Brace and Henry D. Laughlin, president of the Perry Sidebearlng company, went to Madison, Wis., last Friday to appear before the United States court there. Mr. Laughlin was to go on to St. Paul. but Mr. Brace returned to Highland Park Saturday evening. The hour of his arrival was not known. and it could not be learned if he took a train directly to Chicago, came by way of Milwaukee on a train that stopped at Highland Park, or left it at some point farther north and by interurban electric reached the suburb.
Newsboy Alarmed by Discovery.
Marcus Berune, a 10 year old schoolboy, who was delivering Sunday papers, approached, the Brace residence at Linden, avenue and Sheridan road by way of the former street at 6:30 a. m. As he went down an incline lending to a ravine directly adjoining the Brace property he saw a dark mass, which he behaved to be two dogs lying in the snow. He avoided it by going into the street and from there saw it was the body of a man. He was too frightened to go closer and, delivering the rest of his papers, told two other boys, Bert and George Kirby, of his discovery. The three returned and identified the body as that of Mr. Bruce. When the police had taken the body into the house Mr. Brace's partners, James H. Defrees, Henry A. Ritter, and John G. Campbell were notified. They went directly to Highland Park, where they made a thorough examination of the snow near the place where the body was found, questioned the boys closely, and when the coroner, Dr. J. L. Taylor of Libertyville, arrived they had ready for him all their information in connection with the case.
Hat Crushed by Fall
The body lay with the head to the north, as if the homeward bound man's feet had slipped under him on the slope and he had fallen upon his back, a belief supported by the crushing in of the back of his derby hat found under his head. There were no signs of a struggle in the snow or that Mr. Brace had moved after the fall. His small handbag was about six feet back, as if it had been thrown by the Jerking of his arms when he felt himself slipping. The contents at his pockets-money, jewelry, and papers were undisturbed. "He was a heavy man," said Mr. Dufrees, "not tall, but weighing about 180 pounds, and he always gave the impression of walking carefully as if in dread of a fall. He took little short steps and a sudden fall for a man of such extremely sedentary habits as his might easily have serious consequences. The only alternative from our belief that he was stunned by the fall and did not recover until he had been partly frozen by the terribly cold wind that swept through here, last night, is that he was attacked by heart failure, apoplexy, or paralysis, but he was not known to be subject to such ailments."
Death Caused by Freezing.
Mr. Brace's partners said his personal habits were uninjurious, save that, marked as they were by close application to his work and lack of physical exercise, they might leave him incapable of the a struggle with a bad storm from the railroad depot to his house, a distance of a mile over snow drifted sidewalks and in the face of a strong wind. Coroner Taylor found no external appearance of violence and announced that an autopsy was unnecessary. The jury returned a verdict of "freezing, occurring during a period of unconsciousness caused by a fall upon a slippery sidewalk." Mr. Brace had achieved an enviable reputation as an attorney in chancery cases. He practiced in Chicago for twenty years and during the latter half of that period had lived at Highland Park. He was born in Westernport, Md., Nov. 23, 1850, and was admitted to the bar in 1871, beginning practice In Cumberland, Md. He came to Chicago in 1888 and was associated with the firm at Aldrich, Payne & Defreee, which later was changed to Defrees, Brace & Ritler. He was a member of the Chicago and the Illinois State Bar Associations, the Law institute, of which he was president in 1901, and of the Marquette, Republican, Highland Park, and Exmoor clubs. He left a widow, Mrs. Margaret Thomas Brace, and one son, William Brace Jr., 15 years old. Funeral plans have not been completed.

WM. BRACE FOUND FROZEN TO DEATH ~ A One Time Leader of Allegany County Bar is Dead. HE DIED IN CHICAGO. He Was One of the most Astute Lawyers of the Country and Was Once in Partneship with Hon. B. A. Richmond
Special to the Times
Chicago, Ill. Feb. 3 --Wm. Brace, a prominent lawyer was found frozen to death near his suburban home, at Highland Park, yesterday. He was presumaby made unconscious by a fall and froze before assistance came. He was born at Westernport, Md., in 1850 and was admitted to the bar in 1871, and started to practice at Cumberland, Md. He came here in 1888. He leaves a wife and a 15-year-old son here. Dr. Charles H. Brace received word yesterday that his brother William Brace, a prominent lawyer, had died suddenly at his home in Chicago. At one time Mr. Brace was the Republican leader in Allegany county and when he left Cumberland for the west in 1888, he was regarded as the leader at the Allegany county bar. Mr. Brace was a native of Allegany county and was in his fifty-eighth year. Mr. Brace was the eldest of seven children. His grandparents emigrated from Wales and settled in Connecticut. His father was a native of that state. The father was a soldier in the Mexican war. He was wounded several times but served throughout the war. At its close he settled in Maryland and was employed in the engineer corps in the construction of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. At the closing of his engagement with the railroad company he settled in Cumberland, where he followed civil and mining engineering and surveying and devised and superintended the consturction of many of the mining improvement now in use in the coal regions. He married Susan Stafford of Virginia and their children were: William, Mary, who died in infancy; Chas. H. Cumberland; Harry C. C., lawyer, and Sue C. wife of Chas. A. Cleaves, a resident of St. Louis, Mo., Thomas, died at the age of ten years. The father died in Cumberland, in September, 1875. William Brace (son of William) received his education in Allegany County Academy, supplemented by a number of years of private instruction under the Rev. Dr. John W. Nott, formerly of Mt. Savage. He was admitted to the bar, October 18, 1871, and at once entered into the practice of his profession in the office of Judge Pearre, the later[sic] having been elected judge of the Fourth Judicial Circuit of Maryland. From the first Mr. Brace took a high rank in his profession and he built up a constantly increasing practice. In 1876 he formed a partnership with Benjamin A. Richmond under the firm name of Brace & Richmond. This [fi]rm was always in the forefront and was represented in nearly every important case at the local bar. Mr. Brace was an astute politician. He was elected to the House of Delegates in 1873 as a Republican. He was re-nominated but, with the entire delegate ticket, was defeated. He was again nominated in the fall of 1877 and was the only candidate on the Republican legislative ticket, who was elected. In the fall of 1881, he was elected over Mr. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal after a hotly contended campaign. [Social memberships omitted] On June 17, 1879, he married Maggie, daughter of James B. and Margaret Thomas, of Frostburg. Besides his wife, one son survives. The funeral will occur tomorrow afternoon at Chicago. Dr. Brace left for Chicago early this morning to attend the funeral. Mr. Brace's mother is still living and makes her home with her daughter, Mrs. C. A. Cleaves, in St. Louis.
