It was also reported to police that he had not appeared despondent and he left no note giving a reason for taking his life. When the mother went to his room he was slumped in his bed with the cord from his bath robe knotted around his neck and tied to the bed post. Death was due to strangulation, and Dr. Linne H. Gorson, deputy county medical examiner, gave a verdict of suicide after viewing the body. Mrs. Dilfer was in a state of collapse when Sgt. Raymond Johnston, of the city police arrived at the home in answer to a call to headquarters. Later, County Investigator Terrence J. Boyle and Detective Lieut. B. Frank Gaffney went to the home. The dead man was a graduate of Allegany High School and served more than three years in the Army. Dr. Gorson placed the time of death at about 5 a. m. yesterday.
