HONE, Mrs. Alma A. Davis

Alma A. Hone, 84, formerly of 505 W. Larwill St., Wooster, died Sunday, Feb. 28, at Smithville-Western Care Center. Services will be Thursday at the Grampian Church of God Church in Grampian, Pa. The Rev. Michael D. Hone, her grandson, will officiate. Burial will be in Grampian Friends Cemetery. She was born in Reynoldsville, Pa., in 1903 to Sylvester and Larena Schaffner Davis, and married the Rev. Dewey L. Hone on July 23, 1924 in New Kensington, Pa. He died on Nov. 24, 1980. She had lived in Grampian prior to moving to Wooster 20 years ago and had attended the Assembly of God Church in Wooster and the Market Street Church of God. Surviving are two children, Boyd of Winter Park, Fla., and Robert of Alliance; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Edna Shanley of Ridgeway, Pa., and Laura Mortimer of Florida. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Arlene Donaldson; two sons, Donald and Gerald; five sisters, Beryle Hidinger, Martha Singer, Norma Thompson, Orpha Calhoun, and Avonell Wingard; an infant brother, Maurice Davis; and a brother, Vincent Davis.

HONE, Rev. Dewey L.

The Rev. Dewey L. Hone, 82, of 505 W. Larwill St., Wooster, died early this morning (Monday) at Wooster Community Hospital. Services will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. at McIntire Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert VanFossen officiating. Burial will be at Grampian Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. He was born in 1898 in Dawson, Pa., to Harry and Minnie Davis Hone and married the former Alma Davis, who survives. For 25 years he was the minister of the Church of God in Meadeville and Grampian, Pa., and had lived in Wooster for 12 years. Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Boyd of Winter Park, Fla., Gerald of Houston, Texas, and Robert of Alliance; 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and two brothers, Orlen of Vandergrift, Pa., and Samuel of Apollo, Pa. One daughter, Mrs. Arlene Donaldson, one son, Donald, one sister, Edna, and a half-brother, Herman, died previously.

HONSE, Charles W.

Charles W. Honse, Sr., 77, of Mill Run, died unexpectedly Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at his home. He was born April 16, 1926, in Weltytown, Westmoreland County, a son of the late Ira Casper and Gertrude E. (Little) Honse. Prior to his retirement in 1985, Charles was the owner and operator of the Laurel Lee Inn in Stewart Township. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater of action. He was a long time member of the Connellsville Sons of Italy and the Connellsville Eagles #493. Charles is survived by two sons, Charles W. Honse, Jr., of Pittsburgh, and David R. Garlick of South Connellsville; his long time companion Nellie Porterfield of Mill Run; three (only names of two are listed) grandchildren, Tambra of Latrobe, Melva of Connellsville. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Pearl Garlick Honse; a brother, Carl Honse, and two sisters, Shirley Rivera and Fern Roble. It was Charles' request that there be no public viewing or service. Services were provided by the Brooks Funeral Home, Connellsville.

HONSE, Mrs. Pearl L. Garlick

Pearl L. Honse, 52, of Mill Run, R.D. 1 died late Tuesday evening in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was born Oct. 29, 1926, at Connellsville, daughter of the late Raymond and Bertha Ritenour Garlick. She was owner of the Laurelee Inn. Mill Run, R.D. 1 and was a member of the Albright United Methodist Church, South Connellsville. She was also a member of the Rebekahs Lodge of Connellsville. She is survived by her husband, Charles W. Honse; two sons, David W. Garlick of Connellsvillle;  and Charles W. Honse Jr. of Pittsburgh; three grandchildren; three brothers, H. R. Garlick, Glenn G. Garlick and Ray R. Garlick, all of South Connellsville, and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Shaffer of South Connellsville. She was predeceas by a sister, Freida Shrouer.

DOROTHY LEE DARR HOOD, 80, of Huntington, W.Va., died Sunday, January 14, 2007, in Hospice House of Huntington. She was born March 31, 1926, in Westernport, Md., a daughter of the late William H. and Flora Pearl Darr. She was preceded in death by one brother, James W. Darr; two sisters, Mary Kroll and Nadene Sherk. She leaves behind her husband, the Rev. Charles "Ed" Hood; one son, Charles W. Hood; six grandchildren, James Edward, Richard William, Aaron Lee, Charlie Lynn, Susan Jade, and Maranda Neshell Hood; two great-grandchildren, Makayla Lynn and Garette Lee Hood; and many nieces and nephews. She was a member of the Fourth Avenue United Methodist Church for 47 years. Funeral service will be conducted 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, by the Rev. Dale Waters. Following visitation hours on Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Interment will be in Philos Cemetery, Westernport, Md., on Friday, January 19, 2007. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice House of Huntington or the Fourth Avenue United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Anna Hook, wife of Harry Hook of Cumberland, died Saturday of paralysis. Deceased was a sister of John McDermott of Connellsville and a former resident of this place. She was about 63 years old. In addition to her husband and brother, one daughter, Mrs Mary Hahn of Cumberland survives. The body will arrive here tomorrow morning on the Western Maryland train and will be removed to St Joseph's cemetery for interment.

On Friday evening, she suffered a stroke of paraylsis, the third in two years, and her death followed Saturday. Mrs. Hook formerly resided here with her mother, the late Mrs. McDermott. She is the eldest sister of Mrs. J. H. Cramer, of this place. The funeral services were held Tuesday morning from St. Patrick's church, Cumberland, and the remains were taken to Connelsville, Pa., where they were laid to rest beside her husband, the late Mr. Harrison Hook."

Mt. Savage - Mrs. Emma P. Hook, 51, wife of Isaac D. Hook, Mt. Savage, died Sunday in Sacred Heart Hospital where she had been a patient since 16[?the 16th?]. A native of Mt. Savage, she was born June 12, 1902 a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John C. Crawford. Mrs. Hook was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church, St. Margaret's Chapter and St. Ann's Circle of the church, Wildey Rebekah Lodge No. 4 and Pride of Mt. Savage Council No. 20, Daughters of America. Besides he husband she is survived by two sons, George Ellsworth Rice, Havre de Grace, and Howard T. Rice, Mt. Savage; one daughter, Miss Imogene Ruby Hook, Mt. Savage; one sister, Mrs. Pleasant Armstrong, New Cumberland, W. Va., and six grandchildren. Services will be conducted tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. in St. George's Church with Rev. G. Stanley Schwind, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The body is at the home of her son, Howard T. Rice, here. Lodge 4 will meet at 8 p.m. at the home for services today while Council 20 will meet at 8:30 also at the home today.

HOOK, George & John

DUBOIS PA July 17 - The bodies of 21 victims of the mine explosion were taken from the workings at Sykesville today. The bodies were not burned or otherwise mutilated and it was evident that they died from after damp.
G. A. Burrell, chemist of the bureau of mines car from Pittsburg[sic], took a quantity of blood from the body of each victim and will examine it to determine the number killed by the explosion and the number by damp. It is believed the explosion was caused when some miner struck a pocket of gas and it exploded from the naked lamp.
The greatest mine disaster in this section of the country occurred last night at 9:30 o'clock in a shaft of the Cascade Coal and Coke Company at Sykesville, 9 miles south of Dubois, the lives of 21 miners being snuffed out almost instantly as the result of an explosion.
Three sets of brothers and a father and son are included in the list of the dead.
George and John Hook, brothers, were found clasped in each other's arms, as were also Nick Pavelick and his young son, aged 15 years. Nick Pavelick and his son were hurrying along together and, finding that death was inevitable, they embraced each other in a farewell and died while clasped together.
The first intimation that the people on the surface had that an explosion had occurred was when the safety door on the fan blew open and the machinery began to run wild. It was immediately surmised that something was radically wrong in the shaft, but the extent of the disaster was not known until 11 o'clock last night, when the rescuers entered the mine.

The funeral of Mrs. Kate Hook took place from St Peters Catholic church Saturday. The deceased was 39 years of age and her death was super induced by la grippe with which she was afflicted about one year ago. She leaves four children, two boys and two girls, aged 11, 8, 6, and 4 years as the result of her marriage to Mr. Chas Hook in 1874. Her remains were accompanied here from Baltimore by her husband, her father, Mr. Peter Lannon, her brother, Peter, Jr, and sister Mrs. Mary E. O'Brien and her daughter. She left her children in the care of a Catholic Charitable Home of Baltimore where they will be tenderly cared for.

Born November 20, 1926 in Cumberland, Md., she was a daughter of the late Gertrude (Dean) Schriver and her husband Mike Schriver of Cumberland; and paternal father Roy Henley; Jean was preceded in death by a very special nephew, Robert A. Schriver of Mt. Savage, as well as, many cherished uncles and aunts. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Eugene E. Hook; one child, Deborah A. (Oleskie) Donoflio and husband Vincent Donoflio of LaVale; two grandchildren (twins), Joseph E. Oleskie and Genie M. Oleskie of LaVale; one sister, Barbara (Schriver) Wilson of Cumberland; and one brother, Richard Schriver and wife Joan of Cumberland Md. Death of Mr. W. H. H. Hook.
William Henry Harrison Hook, about 63 years, died at his home on Emily street yesterday evening. Mr Hook had been in declining health for some months. He had formerly been a miller in the employ of the R. D Johnson Milling Company, this city. His brother, Mr. James P. Hook, a well known pharmacist of Hancock, arrived in the city last night. He is the last of the family. Their father, Capt. James D. Hook, who died over a year ago at Hancock, brought the first canal boat to Cumberland upon the completion of the waterway to this point. At one time Mr. Hook was conductor in the Baltimore & Ohio yards at Connellsville, Pa, He is survived by one daughter. Mrs. Thomas Kelly, who resides on Emily street, this city.

MEYERSDALE, March 7 - Mrs. Elizabeth Suder Hoon, 91 years old, died Thursday night at her home at 223 Main street following a brief illness. Mrs. Hoon, widow of Valentine Hoon, who died 25 years ago, was the mother of four children, one of whom survives, William H., of Meyersdale. There are two brothers, Peter Suder of Berlin and Henry Suder of Meyersdale, and one sister in Oklahoma.

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Charles K. (Mousie) Hoover, 64, 249 S. Washington St., died Wednesday evening at the Veterans Hospital in Martinsburg, W. Va. Born in Kauffman Station, Pa., he was the son of the late John H. and Bessie McKenzie Hoover. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He served with the U.S. Army for 22 years prior to retiring in 1967 with the rank of Sergeant First Class. He was a member and past commander of Frank L. Carbaugh Post 37J of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis L. Holbert Hoover, one daughter, Mrs. Edward Button of Hagerstown; one son, Charles Gregory Hoover at home; three sisters, Mrs. Raymond Garling, Mrs. Brinton Cordell, and Mrs. William Kinafrock, all of Greencastle; four brothers, Warren Hoover, Harry Hoover, and Donald Hoover, all of Greencastle, and James Hoover of Hagerstown; and four grandchildren. Meyersdale, Pa., Aug. 6 — A native of Elk Lick Township, Mrs. Emma (Lichty) Hoover, 90, died yesterday morning at her home east of Meyersdale. She was the widow of William I. Hoover. No arrangements have been made. Mrs. Hoover was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Lichty and a member of the Church of the Brethren. Surviving are nine children: Isaiah, with whom she resided; Elijah, of Garrett; Harry, of Somerset; Mrs. William H. Weimer of Rockwood; Mrs. Edward C. Weimer, Indian Head; Mrs. Roy C. Snyder and Mrs. Dallas Klink, both of Rockwood, and Mrs. Noah Heiple, of Somerset.

HOOVER, Mrs. Hilda Deist

MEYERSDALE, Pa. — Mrs. Hilda D. Hoover, 61, died Thursday in Meyersdale Community Hospital. Mrs. Hoover had been hospitalized since a fire in her home earlier this month. Her husband, Merle E. Hoover, died December 17 of injuries suffered in the fire. Her son, John Hoover, also was hospitalized with first degree burns of the face, but has since been released. Born February 18, 1916 at Mance, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Peter Deist and Anna (Felker) Deist. In addition to her son, surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Emily McKenzie of Gray; Miss Doris Hoover, Mrs. Linda Bornyak and Mrs. Marie Patton, all of here, and nine grandchildren. Friends are being received at the Leckemby Funeral Home where services will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jerry Weneck officiating. Interment will be in Fritz Cemetery.

Howard Clark Hoover, 54, of Maple Grove Rd., Grantsville, Md. died Tuesday, September 16, 2003, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland. Born February 24, 1949, in Grantsville, he was a son of Carrie (Hare) Hoover, Grantsville and the late Simon Hoover. He was preceded in death by one brother, George. SOMERSET - Mrs. Ida Belle Hoover, 73, of here, died Sunday in the Somerset Community Hospital. A native of Somerset County, she was born February 14, 1884, a daughter of the late Richard F. and Mary Jane (Nedrow) Housel. Her husband, Joseph Hoover, died in 1925. She was a member of the Salisbury Reformed Church. Survivors include five sisters, Mrs. Viola Durr, Frostburg; Mrs. Edith Baker, Wellersburg; Mrs. Albert Brown, of here; Mrs. Lydia Sipple, Salisbury; and Mrs. Irvin Brown, Boswell; and six brothers, Oscar and Raymond E. Housel, both of here; Clarence Housel, Mt. Savage; Ray Housel, Frostburg; John Housel, Salisbury; Curtis Housel, Boswell. The body is at the Hauger Funeral Home.

John Hoover, age 79, died Monday evening.  He was born in Rockingham Co, Va and spent most of his life on a farm.  He is survived by his wife, Mrs Annie Hoover, six children and thirteen grandchildren.  The children are, Harry Hoover and Mrs J A Colbert, Pittsburgh; Mrs William King, Cumberland; Lee Hoover and Mrs Patrick Naughton, Keyser and James Hoover at home.  Mr Hoover will be buried at Cumberland Wednesday morning.

HOOVER, M. P.

Last Friday morning about two o'clock, M. P. Hoover, a brakeman on the third division, fell from his train at Rowlesburg and was killed. He lived in south Keyser and had a wife and two small children. The deceased was a young man and those who knew speak very highly of him. His remains were brought home and the funeral took place Sunday afternoon. Services were held at the M E church, South, conducted by the pastor. Interment in Queen's Point cemetery.

The body of Mrs Annie Hoover, 74 years old, who died in Keyser, W Va Wednesday was brought to this city this morning and burial was made in St Patrick's Catholic Cemetery.  Services were held this morning in the Church of the Assumption at Keyser by Rev William Jan.  Mrs Hoover was the widow of John Hoover.  Six children survive.

MEYERSDALE, May 1 — Mrs. Tillie Hoover, 58, died Monday morning at her home at Meyersdale, R. D. 2. She was born in Middlecreek township July 28, 1888, the daughter of the late John and Mary Barclay Berg. Surviving are her husband, Isaiah, and these children: Edna and Glenn, at home; Clyde of Meyersdale, R. D., and Mrs. Harrison Hetz of Meyersdale, R. D. 3. There are five grandchildren. She was a sister of Mrs. William Gary, Homer Berg, and Mrs. Charles Putman, of Rockwood R.D.3; Frank Berg of Somerset; and Abraham Berg of Rockwood.

Mrs Regina E Hopcraft, wife of Jesse Hopcraft, 219 Maryland Ave, died yesterday at the Evans Nursing Home, Oakland. Mrs Hopcraft had been in ill health for the past several months. She was the daughter of the late Michael and Ellen (Wright) Grady. Surviving in addition to her husband is a brother, Gelson Grady, Perry Point. The body will remain at the Stein Funeral Home. It is requested that flowers be omitted. A funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 9 a.m. in St Patrick's Catholic Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Miss Agnes Adelaide Hopkins, 49, of 156 Frederick Street, died yesterday morning at Sacred Heart Hospital. She was a saleslady at Rosenbaums Brothers Store. A native of here she was born October 1, 1903, and was a daughter of the late Patrick H. and Mary (Wempe) Hopkins. Surviving are three brothers, Rev. Joseph H. Hopkins, Moundsville; Francis M. Hopkins, Staten Island, N.Y.; Patrick J. Hopkins, Baltimore. Three sisters, Mrs. Henry C. Houck, Washington; Mrs. Ralph Woodworth, Harrison, N.J.; Mrs. William Cosgrove, Brooklyn. A cousin, Rev. She is survived by four sons, Rev, A, C, Hopkins, Buena Vista, Va., John of New York; Lawrence and Judge William Hopkins of Texas.

Thomas Perkins, of Richmond, Va.; Johns Hopkins, of Philadelphia, and John Thomas, of Cumberland, all colored, were struck and killed by a B&O passenger train just west of Doegully tunnel, 37 miles east of Cumberland, this afternoon. Perkins and Thomas were together. They got out of the way of the eastbound freight when the westbound passenger train bore down upon them. 250 yards west, the same train struck and killed Hopkins who was walking with W. Mitchell.

HOPPER, Mrs. Lovely Margaret Christina Tishue, nee Hughes

Margaret C. Tishue Hopper, 84, of Ferndale, died Feb. 3 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. The cause of death was not available. She was born Lovely Margaret Christina Hughes on Dec. 26, 1920, in a log house in Dunbar, Pa., and was called "Love" by the people there. Because there are so many members of her family, the Hughes family, she attended Hughes school and church and shopped at the Hughes store there.
She left Pennsylvania to move to Washington, D.C., in 1941 and later moved to Ferndale in 1947. Mrs. Hopper was a fiscal clerk for the Maryland Comptroller's Office in Annapolis from 1964 to 1982. She previously held a variety of positions, including working at banks and in the manufacturing industry. She also enjoyed feeding and watching birds. She was formerly married to the late Jack Tishue Sr., with whom she came to Maryland, and later to William Hopper. She was preceded in death by one son, Grady Lee Tishue. Survivors include one son, Jack Tishue Jr. of Ferndale; one daughter, Lovely Elaine Lewis of Glen Burnie; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday at Kirkley-Ruddick Funeral Home. Interment was in Glen Haven Memorial Park.

Miss Artie A. Horchler, 86, of 32 Boone Street, died last night at the home of her niece, Miss Esther Weltman, Alexandria, Va., whom she was visiting the past several months. She was born in Newburg, W. Va., March 14, 1876, the daughter of the late August and Agnes (Mitchell) Horchler. The last surviving member of her immediate family, she leaves a number of nieces and nephews. Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m., in Trinity Lutheran Church, Newburg, of which she was a member. Interment will be in the Knights of Pythias Cemetery, Newburg. The body will be at the church at 9 a.m. until the time of services.

August Frederick Horchler, 38, retired Baltimore and Ohio Railroad locomotive engineer, died last night at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. William M. McCormick, 32 Boone street. He is also-survived by a son, John Horchler, and by three other daughters, Mrs. Myles B. Coburn, Fairmont, W. Va.; Miss Artie Horchler, and Mrs. Agnes Miller, Washington, D. C. The body will be taken to Newburg, W. Va., at 6:15 Sunday on the B & O Railroad. Funeral service will be held at the Newburg Lutheran Church with interment in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Beatrice Belknap Horchler, 79, of 106 E. Cherry St., died at 12 a.m. July 22, 1976, in the Jameson Memorial Hospital after a three day illness. She was born in Ashtabula, Ohio, July 26, 1896, to the late William and Emlin Beer Belknap. Mrs. Horchler was a member of the Mahoningtown United Presbyterian Church, the M.E.G. Auxiliary of the church; Mahoningtown Garden Club; Gold Star Mothers of Lawrence County, and the Ladies Organization of the Maccabees. She is survived by her husband George G. Horchler; two sons, George H. (Bud) of RD 5, and William E. of Mercer; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son Clarence, at Pearl Harbor, and two brothers, William Belknap and Clarence Belknap. Friends will be received at the Kildoo Funeral Home, 101 W. Madison Ave., Mahoningtown. The service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, at the funeral home, conducted by Dr. Clarence Thayer, of the church. Burial will be in Oak Park Cemetery.

HORCHLER, Clarence W.

Mr. and Mrs. George G. Horchler, of 106 East Cherry street, received the sad message from the War Department, Monday afternoon, stating that their son, Second Lieut. Clarence W. Horchler met death in an accident on June 10, in the Pacific area. Details of the mishap which brought death were not given in the message, which came from Adjutant General Ulto, of the U. S. Army, but further word is expected to be received in the letter. Lieut. Horchler, who was 19 years of age, graduated with the June class of 1941 at Senior high school, and entered the aviation branch of the army in April 1942. While a student in high school he was very popular with his fellow students and active in his class. He was commissioned in February, 1943, and left for service in the Pacific area as pilot of a pursuit plane, in March, 1943. During the time he was in service, he was never granted a furlough, and had not been home since his enlistment 14 months ago. Although the location of the scene of the accident was not given, the last word the parents had from their son was that he was located in the Hawaiian Islands, and it is presumed that it was there that he met his death. In addition to the parents, George O. and Beatrice W. Horchler, he is survived by two brothers, both of whom are in service. 2nd Lt. George R. Horchler is stationed at Lake Field, Ariz., as flight instructor, and Yeoman 2 c William Horchler, of the U. S. Navy, is stationed at Altoona, Pa. He also leaves his grandmothers, Mrs. Martha Horchler and Mrs. E. A. Belnap, both of New Castle, and a number of uncles and cousins here.

Mrs. Ethel Harrington Horchler, wife of Harry W. Horchler, former Newark resident, died Thursday night at her home in Norfolk, Va. after several months' illness. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Harrington, who formerly resided at 107 North Cedar street, and was graduated from Newark high school in 1907. She is survived by her husband and her father. A daughter Jenmar, her mother and a brother, Orry Harrington, are deceased. The body will arrive here Saturday at noon and will be taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy G. Mrs. Flora Pettygrew Horchler, 88, of 240 Singer Ave., McKees Rocks, died in South Side Hospital, Pittsburgh, yesterday. She was a former New Castle resident. Mrs. Horchler was born in Sharon, April 23, 1876, to William and Mary Pettygrew. Her husband, Henry D. Horchler, died two years ago. She was a member of the McKees Rocks Presbyterian Church. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Alberta Flohr of McKees Rocks; three sons, Elton Horchler of McKees Rocks, Gilbert Horchler of Bell Gardens, Calif., and Charles 0. Horchler of Butler. Fred M. Horchler, 77, of 425 Norwood Ave. died at his home at 10 a.m. today after an extended illness. Mr. Horchler was born in Frostburg, Md., on July 8, 1892 to the late William and Martha Offman Horchler. He was a member of Gen- Moore United Presbyterian Church and a veteran of World War I; a member of Post 315 Veterans of Foreign Wars; a past Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 522; and the Friday the 13th Club. He was retired from the Universal- Rundle Corp. Surviving are his wife, the former Margaret Patterson, whom he married Jan. 29,1923; a son, F. Richard of Johnstown, Pa.; a brother, George G. of New Castle; and a granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Mamie Scott, three brothers, Henry, Elan and Raymond. Friends will be received at the Leyde-Tanner Mortuary, Highland and Winter avenues from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow. The service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary conducted by John E. Fred M. Horchler, 52, of 1929 Underwood St. died at 5:45 a.m. today in Deshon Veterans' Hospital after an extended illness. He was born in New Castle on March 6, 1920 to the late Elon A. and Alta B. Coates Horchler. He was employed as a welder by the Pennsylvania Engineering Corp. Mr. Horchler was a member of First United Methodist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II serving in the European Theater of Operations. He is survived by his wife, the former Betty L. Gilliland to whom he had been married 33 years: three sons. Ronald F. of Pine Glen, Pa., Ralph E. of New Wilmington and Fred M. Jr.. of Rothville. Pa.: two sisters, Mrs. Martha Jane Lanigan and Mrs. Roberta C. Latimer both of New Castle: a brother Ronald of New Castle and eight grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Robert A. George H. Horchler, aged 44 years, died at 10 a. m. Friday at his home 405 South Second street, after an illness since last spring with Bright's disease and its complications. The deceased was a well known express messenger, and leaves a wife and six children, Anna, Fannie, Frank, CarlHarry and Roy, who live at the home, three sisters, Mrs. Anna Frazier of Newburg, West Virginia, Mrs. Stanley Hagan, of Fairmount, W. Va., Mrs Lena Carricoe of Rowlesburg, W. Va., one brother, William of Austin, W.Va., and a father and mother in Newburg also survive. Mr. Horchler was a member of the German Lutheran church of Newburg, Roland Lodge K. of P., of this city, and the Express Messengers Relief Association of Pittsburg. The funeral will take place Sunday at 2 o'clock, from the home, Rev. J C. Schindel conducting the services.

George Walter Horchler, 67, died today at his home on Hazen Road. He had been in ill health several years. He was a native of Cumberland, a son of the late Frederick and Mary A. (Gerdeman) Horchler. Horchler, 79, of 231 Singer Avenue, McKees Rocks, died Monday after an illness.  He was born Nov, 20, 1882, in Eckhart, Md., to William E. and Martha Offman Horchler.  He had resided in McKees Rocks since 1934, but had previously resided in New Castle.  Mr. Horchler was a member of the McKees Rocks United Presbyterian Church.  He is survived by his wife, Flora Pettygrew Horchler; children, Charles, Butler; Gilbert, California; Elton, McKees Rocks; Mrs. Alberta Flohr, McKees Rocks; three grandchildren; brothers Elon, Raymond, Fred and George, all of New Castle.  The body is at the Stover Funeral Home, 534 Island Ave., McKees Rocks, where services will be held Thursday at 11:30 a.m. with burial to follow in Oak Park Cemetery, New Castle.  Friends will be received at the funeral home today and tomorrow.

GRANTSVILLE — Mrs. Jane Horchler, 68, died yesterday at the Cumberland Nursing and Convalescent Center.  A native of Midland, she was a daughter of the late Daniel B. and Mary (Nelson) Layman, and was the widow of John Horchler.  Surviving are five stepsons, Luther Horchler, St. Petersburg, Fla.; Brydon Horchler, Rocky Mt., N. C.; Randall Horchler, Brooksville, Fla.; Mark Horchler, Grantsville; and Dale Horchler, Hayden, Ala.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Fern Banks, Mrs. Mary Ann Barnett, Vinemont, Ala.; three brothers, Daniel Layman, Cumberland; Evan Layman, Frostburg, and Marvin Layman, Mentor, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Laura Brode, Frostburg; 24 stepgrandchildren; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.  The body is at the Newman Funeral Home where friends will be received today from 7 until 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 2 until 4 and 7 until 9 p.m.  A service will be conducted at the Christ Lutheran Church, of which she was a member, Saturday at 11 a.m.  Rev. David Fetter will officiate and interment will be in the New Germany Methodist Cemetery.

HORCHLER, John Adam

John Adam Horchler, 68, retired B. and O. boilermaker, died yesterday afternoon at his residence, 32 Boone Street. Born September 9, 1883, in Newburg, W. Va., he had resided here 20 years. His parents were the late August and Agnes (Mitchell) Horchler. Mr. Horchler was the husband of Cordelia Horchler, who died about nine months ago. Survivors include three sisters, Miss Artie A. Horchler, and Mrs. Louise McCormick, this city, and Mrs. Mina Cobun, Fairmont, W. Va. The body is at the Scarpelli Funeral Home.

HORCHLER, John Henry

John Henry "Jack'' Horchler, 69, of 634 Columbia Avenue, died yesterday afternoon at Memorial Hospital where he was admitted July 21. A former supervisor of engineering at the Amcelle Plant of the Celanese Corporation of America, Mr. Horchler retired in 1949 after a quarter-century of service. He was born in Cumberland, a son of the late George and Anna Catherine Werner Horchler. Twice married, both his wives, Mrs. Margaret Howarth Horchler and the former Lillian Wilmoth, preceded him in death. Mr. Horchler was a member of Cumberland Aerie 245, Eagles, and Mountain City Camp and Woodmen of the World. Surviving are two sons, Edwin M. Horchler and John H. Horchler, city; a step daughter, Mrs. Mary Jenkins, Youngstown, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Lillian V. Lehman and Mrs. Margaret E. Fradiska, city; a brother, Albert A. Horchler, also of Cumberland, and four grandchildren. The body is at the Kight Funeral Home where rites will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. with Rev. B. F. Hartman, pastor of Fairview Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Grantsville - John M. Horchler, 63, of near here, died yesterday at Meyersdale Community Hospital. A native of this area, he was a son of the late Lewis and Mary Ann (Wiley) Horchler. Mr. Horchler was a member of Grantsville Lutheran Church. Also surviving besides his widow, Jane (Layman) Horchler, are five sons, Luther and Brydon, both of Pittsburgh; Randall, Akron, Ohio; and Mark and Dale Horchler, both of Detroit, Michigan; two daughters, Mrs. Alice Banks, Detroit; and Mrs. Mary Ann Barnett, Cullman, Ala.; a brother James Horchler, Garrett county, a half-brother, Samuel Horchler, RD 1, Salisburg, Pa.; and three sisters, Mrs. Charles Callas, Cumberland; and Miss Fanny Horchler and Mrs. Carrie McFall, both of Detroit. Services will be conducted Saturday at 10:45 a.m. at Grantsville Lutheran church by Rev. Edward Noel. Burial will be in New Germany cemetery. The body is at the home.

HORCHLER, Mrs. Katherine Ann Shibler

Katherine Ann Shibler Horchler, 65, of Hampton, Va., died in her home the morning of Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009. Born in Harrisburg on Aug. 10, 1943, and raised in New Castle, she was a daughter of Wilbur G. and Pearl Wadlinger Shibler, and the widow of Ronald F. Horchler, who preceded her in death in 1991. She was a dedicated wife, mother, homemaker, and a loyal daughter and sister. Mrs. Horchler was a 1961 graduate of New Castle High School. She was a kind and gentle woman.

HORCHLER, Mrs. Martha (Offman)

Frostburg, September 18 - Word has been received here of the death of Mrs. Martha Horchler, 88, daughter of the late Henry and Anna Offman, who died Sunday night at the home of her son, Elon Horchler, in New Castle, Pa. She left here about 50 years ago. Surviving are four other sons (should be children) all residing in New Castle; two sisters, Mrs. William Crowe and Mrs. Annie Eisel, both of Cumberland, and a number of grandchildren. Funeral services will be held tomorrow in New Castle.

HORCHLER, Mrs. Martha (Offman)

New Castle, Pa., Sept. 19-Services were held here today for Mrs. Martha (Offman) Horchler, 88, who died last Sunday following a three weeks' illness. Her husband, a former railroad conductor in Cumberland, Md., died eight years ago. A native of Frostburg, Mrs. Horchler later resided in Cumberland, leaving there 45 years ago. She is survived by five sons, Henry Horchler of McKees Rocks; Elon, Raymond, Fred and George, all of New Castle. Among those attending the funeral were Mrs. John H. Fradiska and Mrs W. E. Lehman of Cumberland.

HORCHLER, Mrs. Mary Amanda Gerdeman

Mrs. Mary Amanda Horchler, 85, died Saturday at the home of her son, George W. Horchler, of Hazen Road, with whom she resided. Born in Cumberland, she was a daughter of the late John and Almira (Long) Gerdeman. Mrs. Horchler was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and Pride of 440 Lodge 30, Ladies Auxiliary B of RT. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, and besides her son, is survived by a grandchild, John F. Horchler. The body is at the Stein Funeral Home, where friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The rosary will be recited there today at 8 p.m. A requiem mass will be celebrated at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church tomorrow at 11 a.m. and interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Mrs. Mary H. Horchler, 96, of Salisbury RD 1, died Sept. 27, 1972, in Meyersdale.  She was born Sept. 17, 1876, in Greenville Township, the daughter of William and Mary (Haberlein) Baum.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel M. Horchler. Surviving are two sons, Freeman, Salisbury RD 1, and Clark of Millersburg; five daughters, Mrs. G. Wyatt Brenneman, Cumberland, Md.; Mrs. Walter Keifer, Harrisburg; Mrs. Carlton Livengood, Bedford; Mrs. Earl Beever of York and Mrs. Samuel Haning of Woodstock, Va.; also 20 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.  She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Salisbury.  Funeral service was held Saturday afternoon in the Thomas Funeral Home, Salisbury, with Rev. Ernest N. Rumbaugh officiating.  Interment in Salisbury Cemetery.

LEXINGTON — Mrs. Nancy F. Horchler, 51, of 248 Otterbein Dr., died today in Mansfield General Hospital after a long illness. She was born in Zanesville and had lived in this area for the last 22 years. She was employed as a secretary at The Clinic on Glessner Ave. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Cross and the Pioneer Garden Club. Surviving are two sons, Jeffrey of Castalia and Tim of Bethesda, Md.; two daughters, Mrs. Roderick (Laura) Evans of Chillicothe and Miss Sally, at home; two grandchildren; a brother, Robert Falconer of Vista, Calif.; four sisters, Dorothy Beathard of El Segundo, Calif., Helen Barr of Lighthouse Point, Fla., Jane Falconer of Corona Gables, Calif, and Peggy Brown of Zanesville. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Snyder Funeral Home, Lexington Ave., by the Rev. Kenneth Chalker. Burial will be in Zanesville Memorial Park. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday after 3 p.m. Donations may be made to the Manstield-Richland unit of the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.

Ronald W. Horchler, 67, of 110 Coates Ave., died at 6:30 a.m. March 20, 1977, in the Rees Nursing Home after an extended illness. He was born in New Castle on Nov. 15, 1909, to the late Elon A. and Alta Coates Horchler. He was a retired welder of the Pennsylvania Engineering Corp. Mr. Horchler was affiliated with the Christian Church. He is survived by two sons, David D. of Mitford, Mich., and James D. of South Carolina; two sisters Mrs. Jane Lanigan and Mrs. Roberta Latimer, both of New Castle, and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred M. and Elon A. Jr. Friends will be received at the Robert A. Myeti Home for Funerals, 208 N. Jefferson St., from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. The service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home conducted by the Rev. Ray Coates of the Church of Christ of Dubois, Pa. Burial will be In Oak Park Cemetery.

HORCHLER, Mrs. Winona Durst

Mrs. Winona Durst Horchler, of near Grantsville, died in the hospital of Dr. C. C. Glass, Meyersdale, Sunday morning after an illness of several weeks. Mrs. Horchler was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Durst, Grantsville. Her husband and eight children also survive, the youngest being four weeks old. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning in the Methodist church, with interment in the nearby cemetery. Rev. J. E. Johnson, Grantsville, will officiate.

HORNBACK, Mrs. Mary Ann Dodd

Palmyra, Mo. Mrs. Mary Hornback, one of the oldest women in northeast Missouri died at the home of her son R. I. Winn in Palmyra last night. The funeral wil be held at the Winn Residence at 10 o'clock tomorro morning, conducted by Rev. Robert Mellroy & Rev. J. S. Frazier. A short sermon will be held a the Hydesburg Methodist Church at 12 o'clock. Interment will be in Hydesburg Cemetary[sic]. Mrs. Horn back was 94 yrs. old. For 77 years she lived in Ralls County. She was born Mary Dodd, daughter of Allen Dodd in Flaquier Co. Virginia, May 10, 1821. In 1853 the family moved to Marion County and on Nov. 11, 1841, she married Thomas Winn.  Mr. Winn died in Sept. 1845, leaving three sons, two of whom are living R. I. Winn, Richard, T. M. Winn (Tommy) both of Palmyra. In Sept. 1850, she married James Hornback. Two sons of this union survive Marshall A. Hornback of Columbia Mo., and Dr. E. T. Hornback of Hannibal. Mrs. Hornback had 3 grand children[sic] and 14 gr. grandchildren. Early in life she joined the Methodist Church of which she had been a faithful & consistent member. Mrs. Hornback's death was caused by senility, but she has been remarkable for her vitality and youthful spirit. Even after she was 90 yrs. old, she took as much interest in current affairs and was as lively as some of her grandchildren. She was a woman of remarkably strong mind and reared her sons to become strong and successful Christian men. In her lifetime she has practically seen the history of Marion & Ralls County made, Hannibal being only a tiny village when she first began trading there and all the great Mo. county west of Marion County bein unexplored wilderness.

HYNDMAN, Pa. - Alzene Sara Horner, 95, formerly of Hyndman, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at Meyersdale Nursing Home, Meyersdale. Born Oct. 14, 1902, in Hyndman, she was the last surviving child of the late Jonas and Sarah Elizabeth (Minnick) Coughenour. Mrs. Horner is survived by sons David A., married to Aneve (Stahlman), and Richard N., married to Faith (Korns) Horner, both of Hyndman; daughters Anna E. Kirchner, also of Hyndman, Phyllis A. Metz, Wichita, Kan., and Mary Jane Moore, State College; daughter-in-law Mary Lou (Gaumer) Horner, Hyndman; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. In 1993, Mrs. Horner was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Albert Calvin Horner, and by son, Robert L. Horner. Mrs. Horner was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Avenue United Methodist Church, Hyndman, and the Order of the Eastern Star. Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Julie L. Applegate officiating. Interment will be in Hyndman Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be sent to the Annie Horner Bible Class, First Avenue United Methodist Church, Hyndman, PA 15545.

KLONDIKE - Guy Horner,  72, of Klondike, died Tuesday,  May 11, 1993 at Frostburg Hospital.  Born Oct. 1, 1920, he was the  son of the late Walter J. and  Goldie (Crawford) Horner.  Mr. Horner was retired from  the Celeanse Fibers Corp. as an  electrician. He was a retired  special agent for the OSI of the  Air Force. He served during  Worl d War II, European  Theatre and the Korean Conflict. He was a decorated veteran having received the Purple  Heart, Soldiers Medal, Bronze  Star, and Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a member of  Farrady Post 24 American  Legion; American Association  of Retired Persons; and Christ  Memorial Baptist Church.  Survivors include his wife,  Mary Ford Horner; three sons,  James Guy Horner, Knoxville; Terry Allen Horner and William  F. Horner, Klondike; one  daughter, Deborah K. Postma,  Augusta, Ga.; five sisters,  Dorothy Hamilton, Arlene  Mishler, Letty Horner ,  Kathleen Palmisano, and Irene  Busse, all of Tampa, Fla.; three  brothers, George Horner and  Allen Horner, both of Tampa,  and Clearence Horner, Albany,  Ga.; five grandchildren and  several nieces and nephews.  Friends will be received at  the Durst Funeral Home,  Frostburg, Thursday from 2 to 4  and 7 to 9 p.m.  Services will be held in the  funeral home Friday at 11 a.m.  by the Rev. Merdith Shryock.  Interment will be at Frostburg  Memorial Park.  The family requests memorials be directed to Christ Memorial Baptist Church , 301  Roosevelt Street, Westernport.

MEYERSDALE, Pa. —Dorothy E. Hornig, 76, of Meyersdale, died June 1, 1996, at the Presbyterian University Medical Center, Pittsburgh. Born Sept. 28, 1919, in Salisbury, she was a daughter of the late Walter S. and Annie (Murray) Johns. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert C. Hornig Sr.; and a brother, Frank S. Johns. Mrs. Hornig was a member of the Main Street Brethren Church, Meyersdale, where she was active in the Women’s Missionary Society. She was a charter member of the Eastern Star 548, Meyersdale; past member of the Rebekas; and member of the Meyersdale and Somerset counties historical societies. Surviving are children Jack Johns and wife Helen (Johnson), Salisbury, Herbert C. Hornig Jr. and wife Nancy (Walker), RD 3, Meyersdale, Elizabeth Sumter and husband Thomas, Doylestown, and David Hornig, Meyersdale; three grandchildren, Richard Hornig, Mamie McDermott and Andrew Sumter; four great-grandchildren; and brother, Robert A. Johns, and sister, Myrtle Bodes, both of Salisbury. Friends will be received at the Price Funeral Home, Meyersdale, on Monday and Tuesday. Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Pastor Robert Stahl officiating. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery, Meyersdale. Detective Dan Horton of the Chesapeake & Ohio railroad was shot and killed by two tramps, whom he had placed under arrest near South Ruxner, W VA Mon afternoon. The tramps made their escape, but a posse is after them.

Frostburg - Mrs. Jane Horton, 62, Winchester Road, who died Friday in Allegany Hospital, Cumberland, was buried Sunday afternoon in Allegany Cemetery. Services at the Hafer Funeral Home, here, were conducted by Rev. J. C. Ledbetter, pastor of LaVale Baptist Church. Pallbearers were Thomas, Donald, Leroy and Gilbert Lewis, Alfred Hott and Carl Ziegler.
