Frostburg-Mrs. Alda (Meese) Layman, 74, of 36 Green Street, died Wednesday in Sacred Heart Hospital. Born in Garrett County, she was a daughter of the late Daniel Meese and Mary (Wetmiller) Meese.  Her husband, William C. Layman, preceded her in death. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and Lutheran Church Women. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. LaVerne Geis, Mrs. Doris Taccino and Mrs. Mary Louise Winfield, all of Frostburg, and Mrs. Anita Ahalt, Seabrook. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Eva Landis, Meyersdale, PA.; Mrs. June Kovacs, Navarre, OH.; two brothers, George Meese, Star Route, Frostburg; Woodrow Meese, Avoca, NY; three sons, William C. Layman, Jr.; Samuel Layman, both of here, and the Rev. Darrell Layman, Sharpsburg; 20 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home by the Rev. Donald F. Sause.  Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Edward Geis, Mark Layman, Dean Layman, Frank Taccino, Derrick Winfield, Wendell Winfield, Sean Ahalt and David Layman.

Algie Layman, aged 29 years, of Arch street, died yesterday after an illness of three weeks of pneumonia. The deceased is survived by his mother, Mrs. Louise Layman, and the following sisters and brothers: George and Benjamin of Shaft; Robert, of Carlos; William, at home; Ernest, of Shaft; Lawrence, at home and Owen, of Cumberland; Mrs Willie Long, Mrs. Russel Diehl, Mrs. Charles Wolfe and Mrs. Neat, all of Cumberland; Misses Ada and Ruth, at home. The family moved from Carlos to Cumberland a few months ago. Burial will be in Allegany cemetery, Frostburg.

Mrs. Annie Louise Layman, 94, a native of Eckhart, near Frostburg, died Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fuller Davis, Frostburg, which [sic] whom she made her home. She was the daughter of the late Nelson Crowe and Mary Ann Winebrenner Crowe and was a member of the Shaft Methodist Church. Surviving are Children, Mrs. Charles J. Wolfe, The Terrace, Hagerstown; Mrs. Nellie Byrnes [sic], Mrs. Annie Neat, Mrs. Ada Koelker, Cumberland; Mrs. Davis, Frostburg; Robert Layman, Detroit; Benjamin Layman, Shaft, and Lawrence Layman, Alexandria, Va.; 47 grandchildren; 73 great grandchildren; and 15 great great grandchildren; also three sisters. She was one of the oldest residents of the Frostburg area.

Argil Anthony Layman, 83, of the Lions Manor Nursing Home, formerly of Masons Road, Cumberland died Wednesday, Feb 8 1995, at the nursing home. Born April 14, 1911, in Whitmer, WV, he was the son of the late William Sheridan and Martha Elizabeth (Heavner) Layman.  He also was preceded in death by his wife, Wilda Rosella (DeVore) Layman in 1978 and one brother, Virgil Layman. Mr. Layman retired in 1973 from the Western Maryland Railroad where he worked as a brakeman. Surviving are one son, Ronald Layman and wife, Judy, Cumberland; four daughters, Eleanor Dorsey, Cumberland; Arlene Haislip and husband Charles, Williamsport; Martha Barnhart and husband Daniel, Falling Waters, WV; Kathy Webb and husband Mike, Cumberland; one step daughter, Charlotte Kelly and husband, Bob, Carlisle, PA; eight grandchildren; three step grandchildren; 10 great-granchildren; and several step great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the George-Upchurch Funeral Home on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Frostburg, June 30.—Funeral services for Asa A. Layman, 80, who died yesterday afternoon at his apartment at the Savage Arms Hotel, will be held at 3 p. m. tomorrow, at the home of his brother, R. Olin Layman, 41 West .Main street. The Rev. F. Reid Isaac, Jr., pastor of the First M. E. Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Allegany Cemetery. Mr. Layman, a native of Garrett county, had been in failing health for several months. His wife, the former Miss Alice Moody, died many years ago. He is survived by a son, Homer Layman, Baltimore; two other brothers, Floyd Layman, Frostburg, and Walter Layman, Baltimore, and by a sister, Mrs. Sophora Smith, Akron, O. Another son, Stanley, died while serving with the American forces in the World War.

Ben Layman

Frostburg - Ben Layman 86, of Syracuse, N.Y., died Tuesday in a hospital there. Born in Frostburg, he was the son of the late George L. and Annie Louise (Crowe) Layman. His wife, Johanna (Ryan) Layman, preceded him in death. Surviving are three sons and two daughters, all of Syracuse; and two sisters, Mrs. Charles Wolfe, Hagerstown, and Mrs. Sam Neal [sic, Neat], Cumberland.

Finzel - Blaine L. Layman, 64, of here, was dead on arrival at Sacred Heart Hospital yesterday. A Garrett County native, he was a son of the late Lewis and Minnie (Dorsey) Layman. Mr. Layman was a retired employe of the air conditioning department at Celanese Fibers Corporation. Surviving are his widow Mrs. Mary I. (McKenzie) Layman; two sons, Anthony F. Layman, Gilmore; Bernard J. GRANTSVILLE—Mrs. Carrie S. Layman, 66, of Star Route Frostburg, died yesterday at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland. Born in Grantsville, she was a daughter of the late Howard and Henrietta (McKenzie) Smouse. She was a member of the Catholic Church.  Surviving are her husband, James Layman; four sons, James F., Joseph and Dale Layman, all of Endicott, N. Y., and Robert Layman of Illinois; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Redd, Alexandria, Va., and Mrs. Phyllis Minnick, Baltimore; a sister, Mrs. Hilda Silbaugh of Pennsylvania and 12 grandchildren. died yesterday in Miners Hospital, where she was admitted December 2. Born in Midland, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Cornelia (Burgess) Long.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Her husband, George H. Layman, preceded her in death. Mrs. Layman was a member of the Shaft Methodist Church and was a charter member of Myrtle Temple Pythian Sisters, Midland. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Gilbert Minnick, New Castle, Del; Mrs. James A. Dawson, Adelphia, Md.: Mrs. H. Rosalie Drew, Frostburg; Mrs. Ernest Densmore, Geneva, Ohio; four sons, Raymond Layman, Borden Shaft; Charles Layman and Paul Layman, both of Baltimore; George Layman, Frostburg; 20 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. The body is at the Durst Funeral Home, where friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted Tuesday in the funeral home at 2 p.m.  Rev. FROSTBURG - Charles C. Layman, 87, Star Route, died yesterday at his home. He had been in failing health for five years. A son of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Pope) Layman, he was a retired farmer. He was a member of Mt. Zion Methodist Church, where he was superintendent the past 25 years and a member of the Church Brotherhood. Surviving are his widow, Naomi (Otto) Layman; three daughters, Misses Clara and Leanna Layman, at home, and Mrs. Edwin Robeson, Star Route; a brother, Scott W. Layman, and a sister, Mrs. Maggie Michaels, both of Star Route. The body is at the Durst Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 2 until 4 p.m. and 7 until 9 p.m. A service will be conducted Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Zion Methodist Church by Rev. Emore McGraw. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church at 1:30 p.m. Pallbearers will be Odell Layman, Marshall Layman, Julius Michaels, Ellsworth Beachy, Morris Beachy and Odell Otto.

LAYMAN, Clarence

CAUGHT UNDER FALL OF COAL. ~ Mr. Clarence Layman the Victim of a Mine Accident.
Frostburg, Md., Dec. 10 - Mr. Clarence Layman, aged about 48 years, met with a fatal accident Friday morning while at work in the mines. He, with Mr. Lawrence R. Evans, were employed by Mr. Solomon Brode in mining fire coal in a small mine which is operated by Mr. Brode in the hollow just west of town. About 11:30 yesterday morning both men were working at the breast coal when a cross-bar which had been put up to keep the roof in place, gave way and tons of coal and rock fell completely burying Mr. Layman and catching Mr. Evans, the latter being fortunate in being able to release himself, although badly bruised about the body. Mr. Evans at once went for help and the work of rescuing the buried man commenced with Mr. Brode directing the work. At one time the body was partly uncovered when another fall occurred, completely burying the body again. With renewed vigor the men increased their efforts, timber was put up and the pplace[sic] made secure and again the work of rescue went on. All day these heroic men worked until about 4:30 in the evening when the lifeless body of the unfortunate man was found and brough out of the mines and taken to the rooms of the Frostburg Undertaking Company and prepared for burial. When the first fall occurred and Mr. Evans had succeeded in releasing himself he called to Mr. Layman who answered, saying he was caught under the coal near a car which they had been loading. Shortly after this the second fall occurred which completely covered the man who from all appearances, must have smothered to death as no bones were broken and very few bruises were found upon his body. The deceased is survived by his father, Mr. Norman Layman, and three brothers and two sisters, Messrs, Olin, Walter and Aza and Misses Sophia and Dessie.

Frostburg, June 20 — Daniel B.  Layman, 75, retired car inspector for the Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railway died last night at his home in Wright's Crossing. Besides his widow, Mrs Mary (Nelson) Layman, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Laura Brode, Frostburg; Mrs. James Horchler, Grantsville; five sons: Duncan and Daniel, Cumberland; Evan, Marvin and James, Frostburg; a sister, Miss Mazie Layman, Frostburg; a brother, Thomas, Richwood, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Frostburg, Md., Feb. 17 - Miss Desse Layman, aged 50 years, daughter of the late Norman and Rebecca Layman,of this place, died at Sykesville, Md., yesterday morning.  She had been a patient at the sanitarium in Sykesville for the past fifteen years. Her body arrived in Frostburg this morning at 10 o'clock and was taken to the residence of R. O. Layman, a brother, 41 West Union street.  Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon from the Layman home, Rev. Dr. J. C. Nicholson, pastor of the First M. E. Church, officiating.  Interment will be in the Allegany cemetery. Surviving brothers and sisters follow: Asa Layman and R. O. Duncan Layman, 70, of 397 McMullen Highway, died last night in Memorial Hospital. Born at National, he was a son of the late Daniel B. and Mary (Nelson) Layman.  A former employee of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company, he retired in 1957 after 34 years of employment. Mr. Layman was a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church; Georges Creek Lodge 161, AF & AM, and the Junior Order of United American Mechanics. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Janie (Naismith) Layman; three sons, William Layman, Arlington, VA.; Daniel Layman, St. Petersburg, FL., and James Layman, this city; a daughter, Mrs. Ellen Howdershell, Levittown, NJ; four brothers, James and Daniel Layman, both of this city; Evan Layman, Frostburg, and Marvin Layman of OH; two sisters, Mrs. Laura Brode, Frostburg, and Mrs. Jane Hochler, Grantsville and 10 grandchildren. Frostburg - Ernest M. Layman, 69, retired mail carrier, died this morning at his home in borden Shaft.  He suffered a stroke of paralysis last night. Mr. Layman was a son of Mrs. Annie L. Layman, Borden Shaft, and the late George Layman. He held membership in Mountain City Council No. 11, Junior O. U..A. M. Surviving, besides his mother, are his widow, Mrs. Mary (Harvey) Layman; a son, Major Ernest Layman, serving with the Army in Japan; two. daughters, Mrs. Charles Norris, Baltimore, and Mrs. Milton Smith, Sunnybrook, and four grandchildren. He also leaves four brothers, Robert Layman, Detroit: Benjamin Layman, Syracuse, N. FROSTBURG - George Lawrence Layman, 75, of 202 Braddock Heights, Frostburg, died May 23, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland. Born Feb. 14, 1924, in Shaft, he was the son of the late George H. and Catherine (Long) Layman.  He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond L. Layman and Paul L. Layman; and a sister, Virginia Layman Dawson. Mr. Layman was a retired Road Foreman for the Maryland State Highway Administration.  He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II having served in the South Pacific. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #1442, Loyal Order of Moose #348, Old Rail Post V.F.W. #6025, Mount Savage, and Farrady Post #24 American Legion where he was a 50-year member, served on the Honor Guard, and twice served as Post Commander. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Mary Margaret (Bryson) Layman; two sons, Larry Layman and wife, Jackie, Baltimore, and Mike Layman and wife, Michelle, Frostburg; four grandchildren, Jim Layman and Lisa Layman, Baltimore, Lucas Layman and Rose Layman, Frostburg; three sisters, Rosalie Drew, Frostburg, Marjorie Densmore, FL, and Mildred Minnick, DE; a brother, Charles Layman, Baltimore; and numerous nieces and nephews. Carlos, MD., July 10 - George Layman, 64 years old, a well known citizen of Carlos, died at 5 o'clock this morning.  He was employed by the Barton and Georges Creek Coal Company as carpenter for many years.  He formerly lived in Frostburg.  He was born in Garrett county, and has wide family connection in Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.  He was a member of the Kights[sic] of Pythias and the Junior Order United Mechanics. Besides his wife the following children survive: William, Albie[sic], Lawrence and Misses Ada and Ruth Layman at home; Owen Layman of Carlos; Mrs. Charles Wolfe, Mrs. Russell Diehl, Robert Layman, George Layman, living in Cumberland; Geo. Layman and Earnest[sic] Layman of Borden Shaft, and Miss Nellie and Annie Layman of Cumberland. George L. Layman

Death of a Good Citizen
George L. Layman, long-time resident of Carlos, died at his home yesterday morning, aged about 65 years.  Leaves wife, six daughters and eight sons.  Mr. Layman was an all-round workman, a model general utility man, industrious and good.

Ex-sheriff, George L.  Layman died last night at his residence on S. Mechanic Street following a brief illness.  He was born in Westernport in 1830, and was 57 years of age.  He was elected sheriff in 1869, and following the term in office in 1871, he and his family removed to the Half Way House, between Frostburg and Grantsville, where he also operated a saw mill.  Last spring, he moved to Cumberland succeeding Mr. Garlitz as proprietor of the Tremont House.  He was twice married, 1st to a Westernport lady and 2nd to Miss Rench of Garrett Co., who survives, as do 13 children.  His remains will be shipped to Garrett Co. for burial in the Old Blocher graveyard.

FROSTBURG - Glenn A. Layman, 47, of 161 Main Street, died yesterday in Memorial Hospital where he had been admitted the previous night. He had been in failing health for three years. Born in Garrett County, he was the son of Albert Layman and the late Letitia (Friend) Layman. Besides his father, he is survived by a daughter Virginia, a senior at Bell High School, and two brothers, Elwood of Detroit, and Wayne of Frostburg. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose 348, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles 1273. The body will be taken to the Durst Funeral Home, where friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

LAYMAN, Grace (infant)

A three years-old-daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Layman, of Carlos, is dead. The funeral took place this afternoon and interment was made in Allegany cemetery.

Mrs. Grace Layman, 78, of Meyersdale RD 3, died Sept. 29, 1974.  Born in Garrett County, Md., she was a daughter of the late Adam and Louise (Layton) Werner. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Cecil (Evelyn) Jackson, Meyersdale RD 3; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.  Funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon in the United Church of Christ at Pocahontas with Rev. William Moser, officiating.  Interment in Greenville Church Cemetery.

Death of Grant Layman.
Mr. Grant Layman died at his home just east of this place on the National Pike Saturday night at 5 o'clock from an attack of asthma at the age of -43? years. He is survived by his aged father, three brothers and two sisters. The funeral will take place today, interment being made in the Allegany cemetery.

GURNEY LAYMAN DEAD
Frostburg, Md., April 10—Word has been received of the death of Gurney Layman, aged 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Layman, Avilton, Md., at the Peterson Hospital, Peterson, N.J., Monday, April 5. The funeral was held this morning at 10 o'clock from St. Ann's Catholic Church, Avilton. Burial was in the church cemetery. Besides his parents, Mr. Layman is survived by his widow and several brothers and sisters.

LAYMAN, Harold

Frostburg, Md., Feb. 26 - The funeral of Harold Layman, 34, who died Sunday evening at Miners' Hospital, following an operation for an abscess on the brain, will be held at 11 a.m. at Mount Zion Church, Garrett county. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Layman, a resident of Avilton, is survived by his widow and the following children: Viola, Jack, Marie, June, Junior, and an infant son. He also leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Layman; two brothers, Lee of Mt. Savage and Everett at home; and also two sisters, Blanche of New Germany and Margaret of Meyersdale. Mr. Layman was a farmer occupying what is known as the Richard Layman farm in the Avilton section of Garrett county.

Frostburg- Harry B. Layman, 64 of Wright's Crossing, was dead on arrival Saturday at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland. Born in Frostburg, he was a son of Eugene Layman and Nettie (Morgan) Layman. Mr. Layman was a veteran of World War II and was a sheet metal worker with Local 100. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Helen (Smith) Layman; two daughters, Mrs Margaret Arnold, Finsel; Mrs. Helen L. McKenzie, at home; a son, Harry John Layman, at home; three sisters, Mrs. Doris Stonebraker, Mrs. Nancy Gordon, both of Frostburg, Mrs. Pauline Wagonier, Virginia; two brothers, Robert Layman, Wright's Crossing; Joseph Layman, Borden Shaft, and six granchildren. Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Frostburg, Md., March 21 - Mrs. Hazel Layman died yesterday after a lingering illness. She was the widow of Malcolm Layman who was killed in the mines about two years ago. Three small children survive. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Thomas. FROSTBURG — Helen M. Layman, 80, of Frostburg, passed away Friday, March 14, 2008, at the Frostburg Village Nursing Home. Born Sept. 11, 1927, in Lonaconing, she was the daughter of the late John P. Smith and Hazel Smith and Margaret M. Grove and Nathan "Blues" Grove. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harry B. Layman on June 19, 1982; a brother, John S. Smith, November 2005; and son-in-law, Ralph C. Arnold, June 1999. Mrs. Layman was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Frostburg. She was a 1945 graduate of Central High School. After graduation she joined the Cadet Nurse Corp. She worked as a LPN at Sacred Heart Hospital for 27 years until her health forced her to retire. She and Harry owned and operated Layman’s Kennel where they raised Dachshunds, Bassets, Bloodhounds and Dobermans. They had shipped dogs all over the world and had bred bloodhounds for the FBI and local police agencies. She is survived by her children, Margaret Arnold, Harry John "Blackie" Layman and spouse Beth, Helen L. Kirchner and spouse James R. Kirchner Sr., whom she lovingly referred to as "mother and daddy"; sisters-in-law, Ruth Smith, Hazel Layman and Doris Layman; brother-in-law, Charles Wagoner III; eight grandchildren, Sherry Buffenmeyer and spouse Jeffery, Ralph Arnold Jr. and friend Tracy Leacook, Charles Arnold and spouse Robin, Frostburg, James R. Kirchner Jr. and spouse Dorothy, Hancock, Dayla Cook and spouse Rick, Windsor, Co., Harry Layman, Winchester, Va., Harrison Layman and Sophia Layman, Hancock; special friends, Roy and Ruth Kirchner; nine great-grandchildren, Connor, Casey Arnold, Taylor Buffenmeyer and Alexie Arnold, all of Frostburg, Hunter, Bradley and Alivia Layman, Winchester, Katherine and Rebecca Cook, Windsor; numerous stepgrandchildren; stepgreat-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. LAYMAN, Mrs. Kathleen Baer

FINZEL — Kathleen B. “Jack” Layman, 89, of Finzel, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at the Frostburg Village Nursing Home, where she had resided for the past nine years. Born Nov. 11, 1912, in Somerset County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Bertrand and Clara (Finzel) Baer. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Odell P. Layman, 1989; two sisters, Frances Michael and Beulah M. Wolford; and one brother, Joseph G. “Sam” Baer. Mrs. Layman was retired from Frostburg State University Library. She was a former elementary school teacher in Garrett and Allegany Counties. Her special teaching interests were good manners, history, love of God, nature and homeland, female equality in a modern world, and the value of hard work to achieve our desires in this life. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Frostburg, the Maryland Retired Teachers Association, and  the Garrett County Retired Teachers Association. Surviving are one son, Dr. Robert J. Layman, Finzel; special sister-in-law, Mary Baer, Frostburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, Cresaptown, on Sunday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Frostburg, on Monday at 10 a.m. with Father Paul A. Byrnes as celebrant. Interment will be in the Finzel Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Alzheimer’s Association or the American, Parkinson Disease Association. Pallbearers will be Dale Wolford, Doug Layman, Francis Taccino, Glyn Geis, Larry Werner, and Wes Lashbaugh.

LAYMAN, James (Dutch)

Frostburg- James (Dutch) Layman, 68 of Wrights Crossing, died today after an illness of seven years. Mr. Layman was born in Midland, a son of the late Burham and Mary (Nelson) Layman.  His survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Laura Brode, Frostburg; Mrs. Jane Horchler, Cumberland; three brothers, Daniel Layman, Cumberland; Eban [sic, Evan] Layman, Frostburg, and Marvin Layman, Mentor OH, and a number of nieces and nephews. The body is at the Durst Funeral Home, where friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.

LAYMAN, James Richard

James Richard Layman, 22, of 14 Blackiston Avenue, died Tuesday at his home. Born in Cumberland Oct.. 24, 1964, he was a son of Gary J. and Jeanette (Jenkins) Layman. Mr. Layman was a member of Bethel Nazarene Church and was a 1982 graduate of Fort hill High School. He was a former assistant manager of the Dairy Mart on Oldtown Road and was currently employed as manager of a Dairy Mart store in Morgantown, W.Va. He was a former member of the Little League Cubs and Hot Stove Jaycees baseball teams, and the White Oaks Mixed Bowling League. Also surviving are three sisters, Janice Stein, Fayetteville, N.C.; Terri Nelson, Wiley Ford, W.Va.; and Tracy Summers, Cumberland; one brother, Steven Layman, Cumberland; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Jenkins, Winchester, Va.; four nieces, and four nephews. Friends will be received at the Leasure-Stein Funearl Home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The famiy requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Hospice Unit of Cumberland's Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Jane N. Layman, 75, of 397 McMullen Highway, died yesterday at Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient two months. Born at Thomas, W. Va., she was a daughter of the late William and Ellen (Walker) Naismith and was the widow of Duncan Layman. She was a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ellen Howdershell, Willingboro, Del.; three sons, William Layman, Roanoke, Va.; Daniel Layman, St. Petersburg, Fla., and James Layman, Cumberland, and 10 grandchildren. Born April 9, 1933, in Cumberland, Mrs. Layman was the daughter of the late LeRoy Richard Jenkins and Sarah Jeanette (Morris) Jenkins. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Gary "Skip" J. Layman, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Jeanette was formerly employed at Pittsburgh Plate and Glass and S.T. Little Jewelry. Jeanette is survived by her son, Steven Layman and his wife Rita, of Cumberland; her daughters, Janice Stein and her husband David, of Fayetteville, N.C., Tracy Summers and her husband Scott, of Oldtown, and Terri Nelson, of Cumberland; her grandchildren, David, Daniel, and Philip Stein, Kristin Robinette and Amanda Layman, Brittney Summers, and Sarah, Tyler, Danielle, and Sadie Nelson; as well as twelve great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Thursday, Aug. 11, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. LAYMAN, Jennie A.

Jennie A. Layman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Layman, at the home of her parents at Sutton, Garrett county, on Thesday, April 3rd, 1906, of blood poisoning, aged 26 years, 6 months and 19 days. Miss Layman had been sick for nearly three years. She was employed in the McKeesport Hospital, where she had spent several years of her life. From the above city she was brought home to spend her last days. She leaves to mourn her sad taking away a loving father and mother, three sisters and six brothers. The funeral took place at the Mount Zion church on Thrusday, April 5th. After services, conducted by Rev. McCoy, of Grantsville, the remains were interred in the Mount Zion cemetery.

Died From His Burns
John Layman, 72 years old, died Saturday at the Maryland University Hospital from the effects of burns received on the previous day at Wagner's Point, Anne Arundel county.  He was an oyster shucker, and in attempting to ignite a gasoline stove, was burned severely about the face and body.  Coroner Wiltshire decided that Layman's death was the result of an accident.

FROSTBURG - John Layman, 55, of Syracuse, N. Y., died at his home there last Friday. A native of Shaft, he was a son of Benjamin Layman, of Syracuse, and the late Mrs. Johanna (Ryan) Layman. Besides his father, he is survived by his widow, Mrs. Gertrude Layman; a son, John Layman, at home; three brothers and two sisters, all residing in Syracuse. Burial was conducted there yesterday.

Frostburg - John Horace Layman, 80, died yesterday at his residence, Walnut Level Farm. Mr. Layman was stricken while shoveling snow at his home. He was a son of the late John N. and Mary (Fazenbaker) Layman. Surviving are one sister, Miss Mary Layman, a patient in Allegany County Infirmary, and a number of nieces and nephews. The body is at the Durst Funeral Home where the family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A service will be conducted at the funeral home tomorrow at 11 a.m. by Rev. Kenneth E. Frostburg- John Michael Layman, 18, of Finzel died yesterday at Rosewood Hospital, Owings Mills, where he had been a patient seven years. He was a son of Blaine and Mary I. (McKenzie) Layman, Finzel, who survive. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. Also surviving are two brothers, Anthony Layman, Gilmore, and Bernard Layman, Ferndale; four sisters, Mrs. Angela Llewellyn, Huffman; Mrs. Theresa Winner, here; Mrs. Margaret Stewart, Cumberland and Mrs. Virginia DeWitt, Fairfax, VA. The body is at the Durst Funeral Home where friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow. LAYMAN, John Nelson

John N. Layman, aged 72, a prominent Allegany county farmer, died at his home, at Walnut Level farm, near Frostburg, at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Mr. Layman had been ill several months with heart trouble. He ate a hearty dinner yesterday and died suddenly shortly afterwards. The survivors are Mrs. Layman, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Fazenbaker, Garrett county. The children who survive are Mrs. J. J. Durst, Frostburg, and Misses Mary, Susan and Clara Layman, and Marvin and Horace Layman of Walnut Level Farm. Mr. Layman was tax collector in Allegany county in 1898. He was superintendent of the Graham farm, sixteen years and purchased it seventeen years ago for $16,000. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Thos. R. Van Dyke of the M. E. Church and Rev. Harry Hursh Biedleman of St. Paul's Lutheran will officiate. Burial will be in Allegany cemetery.

Frostburg-  Joseph V. Layman, 53, of 5 Jefferson Avenue, Endicott, NY, was found dead in his apartment there yesterday after suffering a heart attack. Born on Star Route, Frostburg, he was a son of James N. Layman, Star Route, Frostburg, and the late Carrie (Smouse) Layman. Mr. Layman was employed for the past 30 years at the Endicott-Johnson Shoe Corporation.  He was a veteran of World War II.
Surviving besides his father are two sisters, Mrs. Mary Redd, Alexandria, VA; and Mrs. Phyllis Minnick, Baltimore; three brothers, James F. Layman, Endicott, who was a twin borther; Robert J. Layman, Troy, IL. and Dale P. Layman, Endicott; and a number of nieces and nephews. The body is at Durst Funeral Home where friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m. A service will be conducted tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home.  Rev. John A. Reinsfelder will officiate.  Interment will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Garrett County. Farrady Post 24 American Legion will perform military rites at graveside and provide pallbearers.

Frostburg, November 25 - Funeral services for Mrs. Laura Layman, 57, wife of Frederick Layman, who died Saturday morning at Miners Hospital, will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. from St. Michael's Catholic Church. Mrs. Layman, a daughter of the late Sarah and Francis McKenzie, a native of Garrett County, had resided in Frostburg for the past 22 years. She had been in failing health for over a year and was admitted to Miners Hospital on Wednesday. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. Besides her husband, she leaves three daughters, Mrs. Alice Speir, Cleveland, Ohio; Mrs. Paul Wade, and Miss Dorothy Layman, at home. She was a sister of Olin McKenzie, Avilton; George, this city; Noah and Peter, Garrett County; Miss Annie McKenzie, Mrs. Nancy Robinson, Frostburg; and Mrs. Edward Lynch, Morgantown.

Lawrence Layman, of 215 Evans Lane, Alexandria, Va., died Friday in New Providence Hospital, Washington. Born in Carlos, Md., he was a son of the late George L. and Anna L. Layman. He had been an employe of the Navy Department since 1934. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Elsie M. (Reed) Layman; two daughters, Mrs. Imogene Sherry, of Alexandria, and Mrs. Leanna Blubaugh, Waldorf, Md.; a son, Benjamin Layman, Syracuse, N. Y.; three sisters, Mrs. Anna L. Neat, Cumberland; Mrs. Ruth Davis, Frostburg; and Mrs. Oma Wolfe, Hagerstown; a brother, Benjamin Layman, Syracuse, N. Y., and three grandchildren. Mrs. Layman was an employee of Frostburg State College and was a member of First Methodist Church and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Sally A. Vann, Landover, Md.; a son, Larry V. Layman, at home, and six brothers, Richard Meagher, Kingsville, Tex.; Eston, Marshall and Oliver Meagher, all of Baltimore; Earl Meagher, Chambersburg, Pa.; and James Meagher, Bowling Green, and a sister, Mrs. Inez Dye, Frostburg. The body is at the Durst, Funeral Home where friends will be received from 2 to 4 p. m. and 7 to 9 p. m. Services will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p. m. by Rev. Harold B. Wright. LAYMAN, Leslie Randall 'Randy'

Leslie Randall "Randy" Layman, 53, of Kingwood, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at Preston Memorial Hospital. Randy was born on Jan. 18, 1951, in Clarksburg, a son of Jane Adams Layman of Kingwood, and the late Robert Leslie Layman. He was a truck driver for Jenkins Trucking, and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Kingwood. In addition to his mother, Randy is survived by a brother and spouse, Rick and Darlene Layman of Masontown; a sister and spouse, Vicki and Greg Harris of Charleston; a brother-in-law, Roger Britton of Kingwood; a stepdaughter, Kimberly Hendershot; three nieces, Lisette Zinn, Larissa Layman and Brittany Britton; and two nephews, Shawn and Dustin Britton. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Britton in 1996. Friends will be received from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, at Rotruck-Lobb Funeral Homes, Kingwood Chapel, 295 South Price St., Kingwood. A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. John Negley at 2 p.m., Wednesday, in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow the service at Maplewood Cemetery in Kingwood. Grantsville - Lewis Henry Layman, 83, RD Frostburg, died this morning at his home at Shade's Mill, about six miles east of here. He had been in failing health for some time. Mr. Layman was born June 22, 1869 at Sutton, a son of the late Anthony and Elizabeth (Poleman) Layman. He was a retired farmer. Surviving are his widow, the former Minnie Margaret Dorsey; three sons, James Layman, Star Route, Frostburg; Tracy Layman, Endicott, N. Y.; and Blaine Layman, RD Frostburg; two daughters, Mrs. Edna Minnick and Mrs. Genevieve Railey, RD Frostburg; brother, Albert Layman, Frostburg; 26 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren. Rites will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in Mt. Zion Methodist Church, with Rev. Don Hinkle, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

FROSTBURG - Mrs. Lulu Durst Layman, 81, of 37 Linden Street, died yesterday in Miners Hospital where she had been a patient five days. Born in Garrett County, she was a daughter of the late James and Jennie (Warnick) Fauzey. Mrs. Layman was a member of Mt. Zion Methodist Church. She was twice married and both her husbands, George Durst and Elza Layman, preceeded her in death. Surviving are eight children by the first marriage, Dewey Durst, Uniontown, Pa.; Lee Durst, Keyser; Lester Durst and Mrs. Ralph Moore, both of Baltimore; Howard Durst, Cumberland; and James Durst, Mrs. Clarence Stevens and Mrs. John Tomlinson, all of Frostburg; a sister, Mrs. Harrison Fuller, Corriganville; 19 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. The body is at the Durst Funeral Home where the family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p. m. and tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p. m. Frostburg - Malcolm (Mac) Layman Sr., 60, of 37 Maple Street, died yesterday in the VA Center, Martinsburg, W.Va., where he had been a patient seven months. Born here, he was a son of the late Malcolm Layman and Hazel (Thomas) Layman.  He was a veteran of World War II and a member of Farrady Post 24, American Legion, here and Henry Hart Post 1411 VFW, Cumberland. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Elnora (Hull) Layman; one daughter, Mrs. Marjorie MacLachlan, Otisville, Mich.; one son, Malcolm Layman Jr., Billings, Mont.; one sister, Mrs. Hazel Johnson, here, and one halfsister, Mrs. Mildred Davis, Westernport.

Ray W. Earlston. Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park where military rites will be accorded by members of Farrady Post 24, American Legion, Frostburg, and Henry Hart Post 1411, VFW, Cumberland. An early morning fire in Frostburg today claimed the lives of a retired couple, who died while apparently trying to make their escape from the flaming two-floor apartment building. Paul Layman, 57, and his wife, Margaret Layman, 65, a retired schoolteacher, died of smoke inhalation at about 2 a. m. after intense smoke filled their rear apartment at the corner of Charles and Broadway Streets in Frostburg. According to Frostburg Fire Department Chief John C. Durst, the body of Mrs. Layman was found only a few feet from the entrance to the apartment with a flashlight lying nearby. He conjectured that Mrs. Layman was trying to reach the door when she was either overcome by smoke or felled by debris falling from the ceiling. Mr. Layman was found in an upstairs bedroom, also overcome by smoke, on the floor after having tried to crawl out of the room. The couple occupied the rear apartment of a building owned by Mrs. Elvira H. Nelson. The building had formerly been a grocery store operated by Mrs. Nelson and her late husband, Andy Nelson. 
According to Chief Durst, Mrs. Nelson, who occupied a small apartment in the front of the building, had been awakened by the smell of smoke at about 1:30 a.m., and called her daughter and son-in-law, Anna and Hubert Crowe, at their home in Finzel. Upon the Crowes' arrival at 2 a.m., the rear of the house was in flames, Chief Durst said. Mr. Crowe ran to a neighbor's house to sound the alarm. Firemen had the blaze under control within ten minutes and had been working inside several minutes before Mrs. Layman's body was found under a pile of debris only a few feet from the entrance. Chief Durst said that the fire grew so intense in the short time that the doors were burned off and that the living room, dining room and kitchen on the first floor of the Layman apartment were gutted. Cause of the blaze, the second in two nights in the western part of the county, according to Deputy State Fire Marshal Robert Shimer, of Westernport, was bad wiring in the kitchen and living room areas. Frostburg City Police said that two officers, George Buckalew and Guy Griffith, had been patrolling the area at about 2 a.m. and smelled smoke in the vicinity, but were unable to locate the blaze. 
Mrs. Layman was born in Hoffman, daughter of the late John William and Anna (Metzner) Hendley. She had ended a teaching career on July 1, 1970, having taught 13 years at Cresaptown Junior High School and the last 26 years of her career at Beall Elementary. She was past matron of Chapter 15, Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the national, state and county Retired Teachers Association. Besides her sister, Mrs. Nelson, she is also survived by two other sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Geis, Baltimore, and Mrs. Pearl Richardson, Rockville. Mr. Layman was born at Wright's Crossing, son of the late Eugene and Nettie (Morgan) Layman. He was a member of Farrady Post 24, American Legion, Frostburg. Both he and Mrs. Layman were members of the Salem United Church of Christ. Surviving are three brothers, Joseph Layman, Shaft; and Harry and Robert Layman, both of Wright's Crossing; five sisters, Mrs. Loretta Cullen, Washington; Miss Mary Layman, Cumberland; Mrs. Doris Stonebraker, Frostburg; a twin sister, Mrs. Pauline Wagniere, Westport, Conn., and Mrs. Nancy Gordon, Frostburg. The bodies are in the Hafer-Sowers Funeral Home where friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

FROSTBURG — Mary (Shuey) Layman, 93, passed away at the Egle Nursing and Rehab Center on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013. At the request of the family, no service will be held at this time. Mary will be laid to rest beside her husband of 69 years in a private ceremony at Frostburg Memorial Park. The family will celebrate Mary’s life in a ceremony to be held later in the year. Mary was born in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, on Sept. 20, 1919 to William Valentine and Pearl "Bush" Shuey. Her family moved to Frostburg in 1931 and she lived here for the remainder of her life. Mary met her husband, Ralph Layman, while working at the "Old Colonial Inn" in Garrett County in 1940 and they were married on June 25, 1943. Mary was an active member of the Frostburg United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school for over 30 years until her declining health no longer allowed it. She was employed at Prichard’s Hardware in Frostburg from the late 1960s until she retired in the 1980s. After Mary and Ralph retired, they enjoyed traveling with friends and spent many happy times at the beach in and around Wildwood, N.J. Declining health necessitated that Mary and Ralph move to the Egle Nursing home in 2007. Fortunately they were able to spend the remainder of their lives together at the home. Mrs. Layman was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 69 years, Ralph Layman. Siblings preceding her in death were brothers, William Shuey and Arthur Shuey; sisters, Alice Philips, Beatrice Race and Doris Williams. She is survived by her sons, Douglas and Kenneth Layman and wife Lyn; grandchildren, Mark Layman, Katherine Layman, Scott Layman, Stephen and Erynn Layman and Rebecca and JD Norman; two great-grandchildren, Hunter Layman and Clara Norman. Frostburg, March 23 — Funeral services for Mrs. Mary (Nelson) Layman, who died early Wednesday morning, were held Friday afternoon from her home at Wright's Crossing.  Rev. Henry Little, D.D., pastor of First Presbyterian church, was in charge.  Interment was in Allegany cemetery.  The pallbearers were William Brode, Harold Brode, Daniel and William Layman, Darrell and Mark Horchler.

Frostburg - Mrs. Mary H. Layman, 86, formerly of Borden Shaft, died yesterday at the Dulany-Towson Nursing Home, Towson, where she had been a patient 16 months. She had been in failing health two years. Born in Shaft, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Mary (Gibson) Harvey. Her husband, Ernest Layman, St. preceded her in death. She was a  member of the Shaft Methodist CHurch. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Milton R. Smith and Mrs. Charles I. Norris, both of Towson; one son, Lt. Col. Ernest Layman, Jr., Ft. George G. Meade; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The body will be returned to the Durst Funeral Home where friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.

Frostburg, May 21 - Mrs. Mary Layman, 91, widow of John Layman, died suddenly yesterday at 5 p.m. from a heart attack. She was returning from her garden at the Graham farm at Walnlut Level, near here, whe she collapsed. She had been in failing health. A daughter of the late George and Sarah Fazenbaker, pioneer residents of Garrett county, she leaves three daughters, Mrs. Jonas J. Durst and Misses Mary and Susan Layman, and two sons, Eugene and Horace Layman, this city; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Woman Dies From Accident Injuries
Miss Mazie Layman, 77, Of Near Finzel, Struck By Car On Way to Church
Miss Mazie Layman, 77, of near Finzel, died late yesterday afternoon in Miners' Hospital, Frostburg, of injuries received Sunday morning when struck by a car while walking along the Finzel road to church.  She suffered fractures of both legs and cuts about the face and head. No charges have been placed against Mrs. Howard D. Llewellyn, 23, of Dan's Mountain, near Midland who was the driver of the car which struck Miss Layman. States Attorney Neal C. Fraley of Garrett county, Dr. E. I. Baumgartner, deputy Garrett county medical examiner, and State Trooper A. M. Spioch are investigating. According to Spioch, Miss Layman and several children were walking along the road toward the intersection with Route 40 when the accident happened. The officer said a minister stopped his car across the road to offer them a ride to church.  The automobile of Mrs. Llewellyn was following close behind the first car, Spioch reported, and in order to avoid a crash, she turned sharply to pass the standing machine. As she turned her car, it struck Miss Layman who was starting across the road. A daughter of the late Daniel and Susan Layman, Miss Layman is the last member of her immediate family.  She lived for many years along Route 40 between Big and Little Savage mountains, but for the past several years had been residing with Mr. amd Mrs. Richard Burdock. The body has been taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Evan Layman, Route 40, about four milse west of Frostburg where funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Charlse Davis, pastor of Mt. Zion Methodist Church officiating, assisted by the Rev. Raymond Crowe, Pastor of Midland Methodist Church.  Interment will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

FROSTBURG — Mrs. Naomi Layman, 87, of Route 40, died at home yesterday evening. She had been in failing health for the past two years. Born in New Germany, she was a daughter of the late Christian and Clara (Arndt) Otto. Her husband, Charles C. Layman, preceded her in death in July 1962. She was a member of New Germany Reformed Church and the WSCS of Mt. Zion Church. Surviving ar three daughters, Miss Clara E. Layman and Miss Leanna L. Layman, both at home, and Mrs. Edwin Robeson, Route 40, Frostburg; one brother, Samuel Otto, New Germany; five sisters, Mrs. Althea Beachy and Mrs. Floyd Broadwater, both of Grantsville; Mrs. Rosaline Broad water and Miss Ruth Otto, both of Akron, and Mrs. Austin Broadwater, Three Springs, Pa. Layman, aged 83 years, died at the home of a granddaughter, Mrs. Harry Dando of Grahamstown.  Born at Shades Mills, Garrett Co., he served in the Civil War with 2nd MD Cav. Owen Alvin Layman, 81, of 815 Shawnee avenue, a native of Frostburg, died at 5 p.m. yesterday in Memorial Hospital. Owen A. Layman

Owen Alvin Layman, 84, of Cumberland, died on Sunday, March 6, 2005, at the WMHS Sacred Heart Campus Hospital. Born Dec. 14, 1920, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Alvin Layman and Edith (Hager) Layman.  Mr. Layman was also preceded in death by two brothers, Walter and Lewis Layman, and a sister, Phyllis Hager. Mr. Layman was a United States Army veteran during World War II.  He was retired from the City of Cumberland Street Department and was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 245 and worked as a bartender there.  A member of the Centre Street United Methodist Church, he became very active in his 70s in several church plays and served as an usher.  He also participated in the annual Community Cross Walks held on Good Friday and carried the cross on a couple of occasions. Mr. Layman is survived by his wife, Rosemarie (Hager) Layman; his daughter, Reverend Bernadette Ross and husband Richard, Cumberland; a brother, Gary Layman and wife Jeannette, Cumberland; his grandchildren, Tana Ross Wolfe and husband David, Cumberland, and Wendy L. An early morning fire in Frostburg today claimed the lives of a retired couple, who died while apparently trying to make their escape from the flaming two-floor apartment building. Paul Layman, 57, and his wife, Margaret Layman, 65, a retired schoolteacher, died of smoke inhalation at about 2 a. m. after intense smoke filled their rear apartment at the corner of Charles and Broadway Streets in Frostburg. According to Frostburg Fire Department Chief John C. Durst, the body of Mrs. Layman was found only a few feet from the entrance to the apartment with a flashlight lying nearby. He conjectured that Mrs. Layman was trying to reach the door when she was either overcome by smoke or felled by debris falling from the ceiling. Mr. Layman was found in an upstairs bedroom, also overcome by smoke, on the floor after having tried to crawl out of the room. The couple occupied the rear apartment of a building owned by Mrs. Elvira H. Nelson. The building had formerly been a grocery store operated by Mrs. Nelson and her late husband, Andy Nelson. 
According to Chief Durst, Mrs. Nelson, who occupied a small apartment in the front of the building, had been awakened by the smell of smoke at about 1:30 a.m., and called her daughter and son-in-law, Anna and Hubert Crowe, at their home in Finzel. Upon the Crowes' arrival at 2 a.m., the rear of the house was in flames, Chief Durst said. Mr. Crowe ran to a neighbor's house to sound the alarm. Firemen had the blaze under control within ten minutes and had been working inside several minutes before Mrs. Layman's body was found under a pile of debris only a few feet from the entrance. Chief Durst said that the fire grew .so intense in the short time that the doors were burned off and that the living room, dining room and kitchen on the first floor of the Layman apartment were gutted. Cause of the blaze, the second in two nights in the western part of the county, according to Deputy State Fire Marshal Robert Shimer, of Westernport, was bad wiring in the kitchen and living room areas. Frostburg City Police said that two officers, George Buckalew and Guy Griffith, had been patrolling the area at about 2 a.m. and smelled smoke in the vicinity, but were unable to locate the blaze. 
Mrs. Layman was born in Hoffman, daughter of the late John William and Anna (Metzner) Hendley. She had ended a teaching career on July 1, 1970, having taught 13 years at Cresaptown Junior High School and the last 26 years of her career at Beall Elementary. She was past matron of Chapter 15, Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the national, state and county Retired Teachers Association. Besides her sister, Mrs. Nelson, she is also survived by two other sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Geis, Baltimore, and Mrs. Pearl Richardson, Rockville. Mr. Layman was born at Wright's Crossing, son of the late Eugene and Nettie (Morgan) Layman. He was a member of Farrady Post 24, American Legion, Frostburg. Both he and Mrs. Layman were members of the Salem United Church of Christ. Surviving are three brothers, Joseph Layman, Shaft; and Harry and Robert Layman, both of Wright's Crossing; five sisters, Mrs. Loretta Cullen, Washington; Miss Mary Layman, Cumberland; Mrs. Doris Stonebraker, Frostburg; a twin sister, Mrs. Pauline Wagniere, Westport, Conn., and Mrs. Nancy Gordon, Frostburg. The bodies are in the Hafer-Sowers Funeral Home where friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

FROSTBURG — Ralph Mason Layman, 90, a long time resident of Frostburg, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at the Egle Nursing and Rehab Center in Lonaconing. He had been a resident of the home since May of 2007. Ralph was born at the Layman Farm on Long Stretch in Garrett County on Jan. 21, 1920. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Margaret (Shuey); sons Douglas Allen, and Kenneth Edward and wife Lyn; 5 grandchildren, Mark, Stephen and wife Erynn, Rebecca and husband John (J.D.) Norman, Katherine Layman, and Scott Layman and one great-grandson, Hunter Douglas. Ralph was the 5th child of Winfield Scott Layman and Ora (Durst) Layman, who owned and operated the farm where Ralph was born. All of Ralph's siblings preceded him in death. They are William Carl, Odell Price, Marshal Thomas, and Lillian Scott. The Ralph Layman Family has a long history in Western Maryland. The earliest documented ancestor was George Layman who settled in Westernport in the late 1700’s. The family later moved to what is now Garrett County. Ralph's great-grandfather, George Lewis[sic, Louis] Layman was a proprietor of the Old Tomlinson Stone Farm and Inn in Little Meadows; and later was elected Sheriff of Allegany County/Garrett County and served from 1869-1871 (prior to Garrett County and Allegany County separating). After retiring as Sheriff, George cleared and operated the farm below the Zion Methodist Church. He also operated a saw mill on the farm. This farm became known as the Half-Way House during the early years of the National Pike, now Route 40. Wagoneers rested here, watered, feed and changed horses enroute to points West. Even during the early 1900’s, the home was often a refuge when severe weather hindered travel. Ralph and Mary were married in Cumberland, on June 25, 1943. They did not own a car, so they took the bus to Winchester, Va., for their honeymoon. They originally met at the Colonial Inn on Long Stretch (now the Hen House). Mary was a waitress at the restaurant; the Layman farm was located about 1 mile west of the inn, and Ralph and Mary began a romance in early 1940 that continued until Ralph's passing. Ralph and Mary were long time members of the United Methodist Church in Frostburg. They both were very active until declining health prevented them from continuing. Ralph was honored for his 40 years of service with a concrete bench that is located on Church property just west of the church. Ralph retired from Allegany Ballistics Laboratory in 1982. His employment began there in 1952. Prior to that he was employed by Prichards Feed and Grain, on Main Street in Frostburg. Ralph went to school initially in a one room school house on Long Stretch, and finished high school in Grantsville. He later attended Catherman's Business School in Cumberland. Ralph was loved by all who knew him. He will be missed. Ralph was cremated in accordance to his wishes. A memorial service will be conducted Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, at noon, in the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, with the Rev. Rebecca Vardiman officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Frostburg Memorial Church or Egle Nursing Home.

Frostburg - Raymond Lewis Layman, 57, of Silver Spring, died Thursday. Born in Shaft, he was a son of the late George H. and Catherine (Long) Layman. Mr. Layman was a former employe of the Amcelle Plant of Celanese Fibers Company and was a member of the Northwood Presbyterian Church, Silver Spring, and Farrady Post #24, American Legion, Frostburg. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Gwendolyn Layman; a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Ann Stine, Hagerstown; a son, John W. Layman, Shaft; three brothers, Charles L. Layman and Paul L. Layman, both of Baltimore; George L. Layman, Frostburg; four sisters, Mrs. Gilbert Minnich, New Castle, Del.; Mrs. James Dawson, Silver Spring; Mrs. Helen R. Drew, Frostburg, and Mrs. Ernest Densmore, Geneva, Ohio, and a grandchild. The body is at the Warner-Pumphrey Funeral Home, 8434 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring. Services will be conducted today at 10 a.m. in the Northwest Presbyterian Church, Silver Spring, and will be brought here to Sunset Memorial Park for interment about 1 p.m. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Heart Fund.

Hardware Store Owner Dies
R. Olin Layman, 89, prominent Frostburg businessman, died yesterday in Miners Hospital there, where he had been a patient since March 20. The founder of the hardware store which bears his name, Mr. Layman had been actively associated with the business until his recent illness. His two sons, Woodrow and Emory Layman, both of Frostburg, were associated with him in the business, with the former assuming the managership of the store several years ago. Mr. Layman had operated a route selling coal oil to homeowners for lighting and cooing purposes before establishing his store in 1919. The business was originally located on Broadway, Frostburg, before it was moved to its present Main Street location in the early 1920's. A former member of the Frostburg Town Council, Mr. Layman held membership in First Methodist Church there and had served on its Official Board for many years. Born at Shade Mills on U.S. Route 40, he was a son of the late Norman and Rebecca (Enfield) Layman. Surviving, besides the sons are his widow, Mrs. Margaret (Rodda) Layman, 41 West Main Street, Frostburg; a brother, Walter Layman, Baltimore, a grandson and a great-granddaughter. The body is at the Durst Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home by Rev. Edward A. Godsey, pastor of First Methodist Church. Burial will be in Frostburg Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be George Kennedy, Walter Mackey, Jonathan Jenkins, Elmer Rupp, John Sleeman and Howard Duckworth. Grantsville, Md., Oct. 22 - Richard Thomas Layman, 66, died Monday night, after a lingering illness. A native of Garrett county, he lived in the Mount Zion section till about four years ago when he sold his farm and moved to Allegany county. After a brief residence there, he moved to Grantsville. Surviving are his wife, Anna Odessa Miller Layman, and the following children: Leander Layman and Mrs. William Miller, Grantsville; and Mrs. Leland Swauger, New Germany, and fifteen grandchildren. He was a brother of Lewis Layman, Avilton; Mark Layman, Jennings; Albert Layman, Baltimore; Mrs. Charles Chaney, Avilton, and Lulu Mulligan. Mr. Layman was a member of the Pentacostal Church, Cumberland, for several years. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday by Rev. Virgil R. Gillum. Interment will be at Mount Zion.

Frostburg, Md., May 27 - Mrs. Rose Layman, aged 42, wife of [James] Robert Layman, of Carlos, died Thrursday morning at the home of her father, Matthew Skidmore, Midlothian.  She was stricken by illness Monday after a walk from Carolos to Midlothian, falling into a slumber from which she never aroused.  She is survived by her husband and nine children.  She was a member of the Pentecostal Church.

CUMBERLAND — Rosemarie (Hager) Layman, 92, of Cumberland, passed away Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 17, 1923, in Cumberland, Mrs. Layman was the daughter of the late James Ferman Hager and Eva Naomi (Zehrbach) Hager. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Owen Layman; her sisters, Almeda Fisher and Lois Zollner; and a brother, Delbert Hager. Rosemarie was in the eighth grade when the new Fort Hill High School opened in 1936. During World War II, she worked at the Celanese Fiber Corporation of America. Over several years, Rosemarie was employed at Memorial Hospital, Howard Johnsons, Miracle Mart, and the National Jet Company. Rosemarie is survived by her daughter, the Reverend Bernadette Ross and husband, Richard, Cumberland; and her granddaughters, Tana Ross Wolfe and husband, David, and Wendy L. Miller and husband, Craig, all of Cumberland. She also leaves behind her great-grandchildren, Olivia Wolfe, Nicholas Miller, and Jacob Miller; and her brother, James Hager and wife, Judy. The family wishes to thank special niece, Carolyn Bailey, and two special friends, Sylvia Hedrick and Paula Wolfe. Former Frostburg Councilman Dies
Frostburg-Samuel M. LAYMAN, 60 of 32 Blair Street, died Thursday, March 12 1992 at the Sacred Heart Hospice Unit in Cumberland. Born on Sept. 5, 1931 in Frostburg, he was the son of the late William Carlton and Lydia Alda (Meese) Layman. Mr. Layman was retired after 30 years as a mathematics teacher at Fort Hill High School and was currently a part-time instructor at Allegany Community College.  He served as Finance Commissioner with the city of Frostburg for six years and was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Frostburg; a member and past president of the board of directors for the Allegany Teachers' Federal Credit Union; past president of Beall High School Alumni; past president of the Western Chapter of the Maryland Municipal League and past member of the Committee for Boy Scout Troop 42, Frostburg. Mr. Layman was vice president of the Percy Cemetery Commission; treasurer of the Frostburg Palace Theatre and area vice president for the County United Way.  He was also a member of Farrady Post 24 American Legion; Frostburg Lodge 470 B.P.(. Elks; Frostburg Lodge 348 Loyal Order of Moose and the Maryland and Allegany County Retired Teachers Association. Survivors include his wife, Elma Gail (Jones) Layman; one son, Dean J. Layman and his wife, Leslie, Ellicott City; two daughters Teri L. Palmer and her husband, David, Harrisburg, PA.; Karen A. Eberly and her husband, David, Frostburg; two brothers, William C. Frostburg- Mrs. Sophia Layman, 84, Frost Village, died today at Miners Hospital where she was admitted December 7. A native of Frostburg, she was a daughter of the late Milton and Martha (Race) Yungerman. Mrs. Layman was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Her husband, Marvin Layman, preceded her in death. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Zack Arnold, Frostburg, with whom she resided; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Layman was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, and the Ladies Aid Society of the church, and Victory Class of the church Sunday School. Stella M. Layman, 74, of Grantsville RD 1, Md., and 804 Greene Street, Cumberland Md. died Monday, Aug. 18, 1986, at Frostburg Community Hospital, Md. Born in Grantsville, Md. March 17, 1912, she was a daughter of the late Asa and Nancy (Durst) Durst. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leander T. Layman. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, a former member of the WSCS, and a member of Oak Grove Mennonite Ladies Aid. Frostburg - Thomas H. Layman, aged 62 years, a native of Garrett Co., died last night at the Half Way House, seven miles above Frostburg.  He had been ill from cancer the past six weeks.  He was a son of the late [George]Louis Layman, once sheriff of Allegany Co.   He is survived by his wife and three children; Charles Layman and Scott Layman at the farm; and Mrs. Forrest Michael of Cumberland.   Also, three sisters, Mrs. Ralph Engle of Grantsville; Annie Layman and Laurie Layman of IA; and four brothers, Elwood Layman; Norval Layman; and George Layman of Newall, IA; and Harry Layman of Chicago.  Burial is at Mt. Zion Church, Albright, WV.

FROSTBURG — William Carl Layman, 68, of 36 Greene Street, Frostburg, died yesterday in Cumberland Nursing Home where he has been a patient six months. He had been ill for a year. Born in Garrett County, he was a son of the late W. Scott and Ora (Garlitz) Layman. Mr. Layman was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and had served on the church council. He was a retired employe of Kelly Springfield Tire Company, Cumberland. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lydia (Meese) Layman; three sons, William C. Layman Jr., Samuel M. Frostburg-Services for William Carl Layman, 68, of 36 Greene Street, who died Saturday, will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Durst Funeral Home by Rev. Donald F. Sause.  Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be James Close, Everett and George Lemmert, John Griffith, Charles Shutz and Franklin Martens. The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to St. Paul's Lutheran Church memorial fund.

William E. Layman, 74, formerly of Baltimore, died Monday in Hamilton, OH. Born in Portsmouth, OH, he was a son of the late Amos and Brida (Rice) Layman. He was an Army veteran of World [War] II and was employed by the B&O Railroad in Baltimore for a number of years. Surviving are his widow, Annie (Lantz) Layman, Bayard; two sisters, two brothers and several nieces and nephews. Services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Arnold-Basagic Funeral Home, here, by the Rev. Bruce Cosner.  Interment will be in South Branch Memorial Gardens. Friends will be received at the funeral home Wednesday from 1 p.m. to time of services.

~ YORK, Maine - William H. "Bill" LAYMAN, 77, passed away July 16, 2005, at his home. He was born in Grantsville, MD, on Dec. 23, 1927, the son of Herbert and Claire (Hanft) Layman.  Upon graduating high school he joined the U.S. Navy and served with the 103rd Seabees in the Southwest Pacific during World War II.  After his discharge from the Navy he attended the University of Maryland at College Park, earning his Bachelor Degree in 1952. Mr. Layman was a professional negotiator and arbitrator for fifty-three years for the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers.  He was also an instructor at the Placid Harbour School in Maryland. He served as Selectman for the Town of York, and was elected three times as York County Commissioner. Bill served as secretary of the York Charter Committee.  He served as the AARP State Legislative Representative, was past vice-president of the Maine Council of Senior Citizens and the York Democratic Town Committee, board member of Seacoast Shipyard Association, Maine County Commissioner Association, the York Co. Maine C.C.A., the Risk Insurance pool director and member of the Work Force Investment Act.  He served seven terms as chairman of York County Commissioners.  He was also very involved in the construction of the New York Co. Jail and the access road was named "Layman Way" in honor of his involvement of the project. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. for 59 years and was also a member of the American Legion, the St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge , a Charter member of the National World War II Memorial in Washington, DC and the Alliance for Retired Americans. Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Gloria Raleigh Layman of York; three sons, William Layman Jr. of Annapolis, MD, Clifford Layman and his wife Melony of Lothian, MD, and John Layman and his wife Chris of Columbus, OH; two daughters, Diane Layman Ritter and her husband Steve of Cairo, WV, and Dawn Layman of Cairo; 10 grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters; a step-son, Keith Bishop Sr. of York; two brothers, Ronald Reed Layman of Cape Coral, FL, and Jack Layman of Berlin, MD; and three sisters, Eileen Damon of Oakland, MD, Helen Zeller of Strongville, OH, and Nancy Layman of Washington, DC. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 22, in the First Parish Congregational Church, 180 York St., York. There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, NE Division, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or the V.F.W. Post 6977 Building Fund, PO Box 201, York Beach, ME 03910.

William M. LAYMAN, caretaker of Greenmount Cemetery died yesterday at his home in the cemetery.  He was a member of the Junior Order United American Mechanics of Frostburg.  Surviving are his widow, Rebecca Layman; his mother, Mrs. George Layman, and the following step-children; Mrs. Jesse Boggs, Mrs. Earl Matley, Miss Hilda Sagle, this city, and Mrs. Harry Lohr, Barrleville.  The following brothers and sisters also survive; Mrs. George Layman, Mrs. Robert Ways, George and Ernest Layman, Borden Shaft; Owen and Lawrence Layman, Mrs. Nellie Long, Mrs. Joseph Koelker, Mrs. Samuel Neat, Cumberland; Mrs. Michael Diehl, Frostburg; Mrs. Charles Wolfe, Baltimore; Robert Layman, Detroit, MI; Benjamin Layman, Syracuse, NY. The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the home.  The Rev. D. H. Steffens, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, will officiate.  Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

LAYMAN, Winfield Scott

FROSTBURG - W. (Winfield) Scott Layman, 87, of Star Route, died Monday in Miners Hospital where he was admitted earlier in the day. Born at Shady Mills, Garrett County, he was a son of the late Thomas H. and Elizabeth (Pope) Layman. Mr. Layman was a retired farmer. Surviving are his widow, Ora Ellen (Garlitz) Layman; a daughter, Mrs. Francis McKenzie, Star Route; four sons, W. Carl and Ralph M. Layman, both of Frostburg; Marshall T. Layman, Potomac Park; and Odell P. Layman, RD 2, Frostburg; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Michael, Star Route. Durst Funeral Home; services tomorrow; interment Mt. Zion Cemetery. Pall bearers, all grandsons, will be Robert, Douglas, Kenneth, William, Samuel and Darrell Layman.

Henry F. Layton, 72, of Oldtown, died yesterday at Frostburg Community Hospital where he had been admitted Wednesday. He had been in failing health the past three years. A native of Finzel, he was a son of the late Howard and Mary A. (McKenzie) Layton. He was a former employe of Crabtree Orchards, Oldtown, and was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1273, Frostburg. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Grace Evans, El Paso, Texas, and Mrs. Emma L. Wilson, LaVale, and a number of nieces and nephews. The body is at the Durst Funeral Home in Frostburg where friends will be received from 7 until 9 p. m. today and from 2 until 4 and 7 until 9 p. m. tomorrow.

GRANT COUNTY - On Friday, September 6th, Joseph Layton, the subject of our story seemed in his usual health, walking around all day and in the evening chopped some stove wood, something he had not done for several months, after which he ate a hearty supper, but shortly after eating while preparing to retire became very sick and about one half hour died. He was educated in the school of “hard knocks” being born May 26, 1824, when the chances for a book education were very meager and all of that kind of education that he was able to secure was just to read and write a little. His father was a native of eastern Virginia and his mother, whose maiden name was Mary Jenkins, was a product of western Virginia.  He made his home with his daughter, Mrs George R Borror, for a number of years. His second wife died about two years ago and now there are two vacant chairs. His remains were laid to rest by the side of his wife. Rev Stearn performed the last sad rights.

LAYTON, Lawrence L.

Frostburg – Lawrence L. Layton, 54, of Finzel Road, died this morning in Miner’s Hospital where he had been a patient two weeks. Born in Garrett County, he was a son of the late Howard and Mary (McKenzie) Layton. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Clara (McKenzie) Layton; six sons, James Layton, Finzel, Howard, John, Paul, Lawrence and Robert, all at home; six daughters, Misses Emma L., Nancy E., Betty A., Phyllis A., Donna M. and Debra J. Layton, all at home: a brother, Henry Layton, Oldtown; three sisters, Mrs. Daniel Wilson and Mrs. John Minnick, both of Frostburg, and Mrs. Grace Layton, of Texas, and a grandchild. The body will be at the residence tomorrow afternoon.

LAYTON, Paul W.

Paul W. Layton, 47, Mt. Savage, died Monday, January 2, 1993, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland. Born September 5, 1945, in Finzel, he was the son of the late Lawrence Layton Sr. and Clara McKenzie Layton. He was a foreman for the Winner Brothers Coal Company in Frostburg.  He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and was currently enrolled in the Summerfield School of Aviation. Survivors include his wife, Ina Lee (Porter) Layton; two daughters, MaryJo Layton, Frostburg, and Terri Mae Layton, at home; one son, Dale W. Layton, at home; six brothers, James Layton, Finzel; Howard J. (Charlie) Layton, Rawlings; John H. Layton, Frostburg; Lawrence Layton Jr., Carlos; Robert Layton, Salisbury, Pa.; and Larry Layton, Finzel.  Also surviving are six sisters, Louise Albright, Finzel; Betty Fair, Littleton, Pa.; Phyllis Diehl, Pocahontas, Pa.; Donna Saylor, Salisbury; and Debbie Brennaman, Springs, Pa.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m.and from 7 to 9 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s by Msgr. John Reinsfelder.  Interment will be at the Layton-Arnold Cemetery in Finzel.

Wellsburg, July 2, The coroner's inquest over the body of Mrs. James Lazear, who was run down by a buggy and killed, in Wellsburg, resulted in Harry H. Garrison being held yesterday for manslaughter. Mrs. Lazear was waiting for a street car when Garrison, who is said to have been drinking, drove his horse directly at her, failing to see her in the poor light on the street. She was born in W. Liberty, 66 years ago and was a sister of Deputy Assessor Biggs of Wheeling. J. S. Lazear, county superintendent of schools of Ohio county, is a nephew.
