SHEA, “Capt” Henry

Henry Shea, 29 years old, a farmer of Ridgeville, W. Va., who came here some months ago, died Saturday at the home of W. F. Welch on the Bedford road, near this city. His body is at the Stein undertaking rooms awaiting word from his aunt, Mrs. Treavey, who lives in Va. The young man sold his farm in W. Va., and came to town to live. He bought the race horse, Mimic, once owned by the late Col. Thomas B. Davis, from W. F. Welch for $1,200. The horse had been in training on the Cumberland track for the coming season. The death of Shea, who had been drinking heavily since his residence in Cumberland, was under such circumstances that coroner Shaw made an investigation, having heard that he had had money, but none had been found on him. Dr. A. Leo Franklin attended Shea and gave a certificate of death from natural causes. The remains were brought up on No 55 Monday and taken to Ridgeville for burial.

SHERIDAN, Capt. John E.

Capt John Sheridan of the Black-Sheridan-Wilson Coal Company, died yesterday in the Maryland University Hospital, Baltimore after three days' illness complication of diseases.  He was 57 years old and leaves a widow and two daughters.  Captain Sheridan was one of the best known men in Western Maryland.  His home was at Mount Savage, Allegany county.  Captain Sheridan was born at Mount Savage on October 31, 1845.  He was early to recognize the undeveloped wealth of the George's Creek region and his savings were expended in the purchase of coal lands.  Thus it was that in a comparatively brief period he amassed large wealth.  He was of a philanthropic turn of mind and he gave liberally to charities.  Captain Sheridan was prominently identified with politics.  He and his friends upon several occasions were conspicuous in controlling Democratic conventions.  Captain Sheridan married Miss Downey, daughter of Major Downey, of Piedmont.  Captain Sheridan's mother died several months ago.  He enjoyed an extensive acquaintanceship and was a particular friend of ex-Gov Lloyd Lowndes, of Cumberland with whom he was closely associated in business.  Every business place in Mount Savage was closed yesterday out of respect to Captain Sheridan's memory.

SHIMER, Thomas E.

A 34-year-old father of three children apparently was electrocuted last night while helping to install a conveyor in Eckhart Mine No. 10 of the Consolidated Fuel Company. District inspectors for the Bureau of Mines identified the victim as Thomas E. Shimer, husband of Mrs. Dorothy (Grant) Shimer, Cemetery Road, Eckhart. His death occurred at 11 p.m. Shimer was aiding several other miners setting up the conveyor in a small room 50 feet long from the main heading. His duties included pulling out a chain from a motor to the conveyor which loads coal. With him at the time were Carl Dixon, of Spring Street, Frostburg; William Pape, Route 2, Frostburg, and Michael DeMareno, Eckhart. A spokesman said Shimer came out of the heading in front of the motor and then went back in. Instead of retracing his steps, he tried to squeeze between the motor and a prop. Pape, who was about 15 feet away, said he heard Shimer exclaim, "Oh!" and turned around to see him hunched down with an arm on the motor and his head on the ground. Shimer's safety hat was still on his head and his hand was "jerking." According to Pape, he called to fellow workers and two men immediately began to give Shimer artificial respiration. Two hours of life-saving work proved futile . . . The body was brought to Memorial Hospital for an autopsy. (More to story) Besides his widow, Shimer is survived by a son, Thomas, seven years old; Dorothy, ten; Wilma Lee, two; his mother, Mrs. Lora Shimer; a brother, James W. Shimer; and a sister, Mrs. Orville Crowe, both of Frostburg. His father was the late James A. Shimer. The body will be taken to the home in Eckhart.
