"Keyser--William L. Zais, 42, of 368 Queen Street, McCoole, died yesterday at the home of his mother, Mrs. Hattie (Ferrell) Zais, here.  He had been in ill health the past three years.  A native of McCoole, he was a son of the late Walter L. Zais.  He was a World War II veteran and a member of Queens Point Post 6775, VFW.  Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Ellen(Shears) Zais; four sons, Pfc. William L. Zais, Jr., Ft. Carson, Colo.; Terry L., Gary L., and Danny J. Zais, and a daughter, Patricia A. Zais, at home; three sisters, Mrs. Louise Cutter, Lonaconing; Mrs. Gertrude Ours, Arlington, Va.; three brothers, Homer Zais, here; Walter L. Zais, Jr., Baltimore, and Orie S. Zais, Falls Church, Va.  The body is at the Rogers Funeral Home where friends will be received today from 7 until 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 2 until 4 p.m. Services will be conducted there Friday at 11 a.m. by Rev. W. W. Harvey.  Burial will be in Queens Point Cemetery."

note: Some factions of the Schmeider family, who lived in Allegany County, MD, changed their surname from Schmeider to Smith during the latter part of the 19th Century. Either that or there was a free association of the two names making them somewhat interchangeable. Christina's family was one of those to make genealogical research more entertaining in this fashion.

Frank Zantopp, aged 82 years, died at his home, 5 Wills Creek avenue, last night. He had been a resident here for a number of years. He was a retired stone mason. Surviving are two sons, Frank and William, and one daughter, Catherine. The body was removed to Stein's Chapel pending funeral arrangements.

ZAPF, Mrs. Agnes Regina Hodel

Mrs. Agnes R. Zapf, 94, of 807 Shriver Avenue, city, died yesterday at her residence. She was born April 9, 1887 in Cumberland, a daughter of the late Harry[sic, Wm Henry] Hodel and Barbara (McMahon) Hodel. She was preceded in death by her husband, George E. Zapf, in 1956. Mrs. Zapf was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the church sodality, and the Third Order of St. Francis. Surviving are three sons, George Leo Zapf, at home; George Francis Zapf, Baltimore; William E. Zapf, city; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from  to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow. Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery. The Rosary will be recited at the funeral home tomorrow at 7:15 p.m. The Secular Franciscan Order will recite the Rosary at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow.

Mrs. Catherine Zapf, one of Cumberland's oldest citizens, died Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary A. Maus, with whom she had resided for several years.  Mrs. Zapf was eighty-two years of age and was a consistent member of SS. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church, where the funeral services will be conducted, Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock.  Mrs. Zapf is survived by the following children; Messrs. Edward Zapf and George F. Zapf and Mrs. Mary A. Maus and two grandchildren, Miss Katherine Maus and Mrs. William Buckholtz(sic).

George Edward Zapf, 73, husband of Mrs. Agnes Regina (Hodel) Zapf, died Saturday at his home, 807 Shriver Avenue. He had been in ill health two weeks. He was born May 21, 1883 in Baltimore, a son of the late Geroge E. and Catherine (Barreis) Zapf. He had resided in this city for more than 60 years. He was a retired machinist for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad where he was employed 52 years. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society of the church, the International Association of Machinists, and the Veterans Association of the Baltimore and Ohio. Besides his widow, he is survived by three sons, George Leo Zapf, at home; George Francis Zapf, Baltimore, and William E. Zapf, city; a daughter, Mrs. Paul Ritter, city; a brother, John Zapf, Oldtown; two sisters, Mrs. Edward Fisher, and Mrs. Clara Schlundt, both this city, and five grandchildren. The body is at the residence. The rosary will be recited today at 8:45 p.m. at the residence.

CUMBERLAND — Philomena (Arnone) Zapf, 54, of Cumberland, passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. Born May 24, 1957, in Frostburg, she is the daughter of the late James Arnone and Pauline (Bolden) Arnone. She is preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Christine Arnone. Philomena was a member of the Shrine of SS. Peter and Paul, Cumberland; a 1975 graduate of Beall High School and a former secretary to Walter N. Yoder and Sons. She enjoyed volunteering for Special Olympics, the Vietnam Veterans, Cumberland VFW Ladies Auxiliary and particularly loved teaching the kids in her Sunday School Class at the Shrine of SS. Peter & Paul. Surviving are her husband, William (Bill) E. Zapf Jr., of Cumberland; two sons, Steve Logsdon and wife Michelle, and granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Joelle, of Pittsburgh, and Matt Logsdon and wife Shala, and granddaughter, Lyllah, of Fort Ashby; a daughter, Stefanie Liller and husband Kenny, and granddaughter, Madison, of Cumberland; and beloved step-children and stepgrandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Rosemary McKenzie and husband Bill, of Manchester and Kathleen Arnone, of Owens Crossroads, Ala.; four brothers, William Arnone and wife Sharon, of Cresaptown, James Arnone and wife Carol, of Ridgeley, W.Va., Robert Arnone and wife Mary, of Brownsboro, Ala., and Regis Arnone and girlfriend Marcela, of Vienna, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Shrine of SS. R. Alexander Zeck, 80, of Aurora, died of natural causes Monday, June 27, 1994, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland, MD. He was born September 23, 1913, in Grafton, son of the late Frederic V. Zeck and Mary McClure Zeck. He was a retired plumber and steam fitter, a member of Morgantown Elks Lodge, Morgantown Rotary Club and SI. Paul's Lutheran Church in Aurora. He also started youth baseball in Morgantown and served as president of the Little League organization for many years. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Margaret Stemple-Zeck; a son, Frederic V. Zeck of Arlington, VA; and a sister, Mrs. Robert Whiteley of Morgantown. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Hamman Zeck; and a sister, Lelia Laing. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 4, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Aurora with the Rev. Paul Poerschke Officiating. Burial will be in Aurora Cemetery. Grantsville, Aug. 24 - Mrs. Sadie Zehner, 69, widow of John Zehner, and sister of the late Charles A. Bonig, Cumberland, died Sunday morning at her home here. She is survived by one son, Roy Zehner, Pittsburgh, Pa.; a daughter, Mrs. Robert Marshall, this place; sister, Mrs. Frank Peterson, Rockford, Mich, and two grandchildren.

Grantsville, Md., Aug. 26 - Funeral services for Mrs. Sadie Bonig Zehner, 68, widow of John Michael*[sic] Zehner, who died Sunday morning after an illness of five months, were held at her home Wednesday at noon. Rev. S. D. Sigler, pastor of the Lutheran Church, of which she was a lifelong active member, officiated. The hymns, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "God's Way Is the Best Way," were sung by Mrs. Harry Yommer and Mrs. Alvin Yoder. The pallbearers were: Harvey Gostner, C. O. Bender, Harold Miller, Harry Yommer, Adam Hanft, and Ralph Glotfelty. Interment was in the Grantsville Cemetery. Mrs. Zehner was a daughter of the late August and Sophia Bonig. The Bonigs were of pioneer stock, and Mrs. Zehner was the last of her family residing here. Her passing marks the third death in the family within eight months. Her sister, Mrs. Charles Bill, died in December, and her husband, John Zehner, in March. She was an active member of the Lutheran Missionary Society. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Esther Marshall; son, Roy H. Zehner, Turtle Creek, Pa.; two grandchildren, Alex and John Marshall; and one sister, Mrs. Frank Peterson, Rockford, Mich.

Mrs. Elizabeth Zilch, 85, of 300 Bedford Street, died yesterday in Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient five weeks. A native of Cumberland, she was a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Lowenstein) Schiller. Mrs. Zilch was a former teacher in the public schools of Allegany County. She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, the Women's Missionary Society of the church, and was a teacher in the junior department of the church for 65 years. Her husband, J. George Zilch, died in 1936. The body is at the Kight Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at the funeral home Friday; burial in the Rose Hill Mausoleum.

FROSTBURG — Mrs. Priscilla K. Ziler, 60, of National, was dead on arrival yesterday at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, where she was taken after being stricken while attending church. A native of Carlos, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Susanna (Adams) Wilson. She was a member of Woodland United Methodist Church and the WSCS. Surviving arc her husband, Peter L. Ziler; five sons, Howard and Milburn Ziler, Potomac Park; Richard Ziler, Lonaconing, and Petie and Craig Ziler, at home; four daughters, Mrs. Richard Bane, Potomac Park, Mrs. Harry Haberlein, Eckhart, Pa.; Mrs. Michael Miller, Rawlings, and Patty Ziler, at home; four sisters, Mrs. Thomas Miller and Mrs. William Morgan, Carlos; Mrs. John Shupe, Cresaptown, and Mrs. James Ziler National; two brothers, Richard Wilson, Potomac Park, and George Wilson, Carlos, and 19 grandchildren. He was born in Yellow Creek March 23, 1888, a son of George and Mary (Bowers) Zimmerman. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Grace Carpenter Zimmerman, whom he married in Bedford, and these children: Donald, of Yellow Creek; Raymond, of Bedford; Charlotte of Pittsburgh, and Leon of the United States Army. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Edgar Smouse of California, and Mary of Middletown, N. Y.,  and five brothers, Harrison, James and Robert, all of Yellow Creek, John of Tatesville, and Charles of California. Mr. Zimmerman was a member of the First Brethren Church at Yellow Creek.

ZIMMERMAN, Charles W.

Funeral services were scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Masood Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with Elder Wilbur Atwood officiating. Burial was in the Reformed Cemetery, Yellow Creek. He was born Nov. 26, 1874 at Yellow Creek, a son of George and Mary Bowers Zimmerman, and married Ellie Shuke who preceded him in death. Mr. Zimmerman was employed during most of his life as a farmer and coal miner. He was a charter member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Six Mile Run. Surviving are seven children, Mrs. Clair Penrod and Mrs. George Stough, north of Lansing, Mich.; Brooke of Flint, Mich.; Mrs. Shauf of Hopewell RD, Mrs. Joseph Mangano of Monaca, Pa; Jack of Williamston, Mich., and Mrs. Hilda Stevenson of Laurel, Md.; 23 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and a brother and sister, John 85 of Everett RD 2 and Miss Mary of Middletown, N.Y.

Surviving are her husband, six children, Mrs. Hugh Koontz of Woodbury, Mrs. Ray Eller of Hopewell RD, Mrs. Max Fluke of Warsaw, Ind., Millard of Everet Star Rt., George V. of Orlando, Fla., and Warren of Edwardsville, Ill.; 22 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. George Zimmerman, a prominent farmer of Hopewell township died at his home last Thursday evenin gat[sic] 9 o'clock, death being due to a complication of diseases. He lived in Hopewell township all his life. His wife and ten children survive: Samuel of Hopewell township, Harrison of Yellow Creek, Charles, of Saxton Route 1, James of Yellow Creek, Mrs. E. M. Smouse of Martinsburg, Mary of Massachusetts, Verna at home, Robert of Yellow Creek, Frank of Saxton and John M., Superintendent of the Everett Public Schools. He was 76 years, 4 months and 6 days old. Mr. Zimmerman served Bedford County in the capacity of County Commissioner for two terms 1909 - 1912 and from 1912 - 1915. He served with Baltzer Snyder and George H. Appleman the first term, the second term he served with David F. Hengst and C. W. Blackburn. The funeral was conducted at the Yellow Creek Church on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

Harrison Zimmerman, Yellow Creek resident, died at his late home, Wednesday, April 16, following a lenghty illness. Mr. Zimmerman was a retired farmer. [1952 written in] Born March 10, 1872, at Yellow Creek, he was the son of George H. and Mary Bowers Zimmerman. On February 22, 1900, he was married to Hallie Clapper, who preceded him in death on May 20, 1951. He was a member of the Yellow Creek Brethren church. The following children survive: James F. James H. Zimmerman of Hopewell Twp. died at his home May 6, 1964. He had been in failing health for the past year. He was born Dec. 29, 1876, in Hopewell Twp., a son of George H. and Mary (Bowers) Zimmerman. he was married to the former Anna E. Price Oct. 2, 1902, in Bedford. His wife survives, along with three children, Mrs. Evelyn Maguire of Harrisburg, Miss Phyllis Zimmerman, Washington, DC, and Clifford. Hopewell Rt. 1; five grandchildren; three brothers, Charles of Hopewell, John M. of Everett and robert R., Hopewell, and a sister, Miss Mary ZImmerman, Middletown, N.Y. He was a member of the Brethren Church, and was a retired farmer. Funeral services today, 2 p.m., Masood Funeral Chapel, Saxton, Rev. Joseph H. Clapper officiating, with interment in Reformed Ceemtery, Yellow Creek. Friends are being received at the funeral home.

John Martin Zimmerman, 91, of R. D. 2, Everett, died Sunday, January 18, 1976, in Memorial Hospital of Bedford county. He was born in Hopewell Township, March 31, 1884, a son of the late George and Mary (Bowers) Zimmerman. On Dec 27, 1910, he was married to Laura (Border) Zimmerman who survives along with one son, Bruce H. Zimmerman, of R. D. 2, Everett; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters and eight brothers. Mr. Zimmerman was a member of the Everett Church of the Brethren and a 50-year member of the Everett Masonic Fraternity, No. 524. He was a graduate of Millersville Normal School and Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, where he received a BA degree in 1918. He began teaching in the Broad top and Hopewell Township schools in 1902. He was principal of the Everett Area School System from 1918 - 1925. He also served as principal in the Hopewell, New Paris, and Pleasantville schools in the years 1925-1934. In 1938 he began working for the Pennsylvania Department of Public Assistance as a caseworker and later became supervisor, retiring in March of 1970. Funeral services: Tuesday, January 20 at 2 p.m. in the Robert H. Chamberlain Funeral Home, Everett, with Roy Philip Bradley, officiating. Burial in the Bethel Cemetery, Tatesville.

LAVALE — Mabel (Wagoner) Zimmerman, 95, of 1136 Braddock Road, LaVale, passed away on Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at Sacred Heart Hospital. Born Jan. 29, 1908, in Springfield, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Harry Leondas Wagoner and Ella Louise (Spencer) Wagoner. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Irvin M. Zimmerman; and two sisters, Eva Wagoner Gower and Elsie Wagoner Allen. She is survived by one niece, Dolores L. Sampson and husband William, Fort Ashby, W.Va.; and three nephews, Stanley H.J. Gower and wife Janet, Springfield, Bruce I. Gower and wife June, Summersville, W.Va., and Phillip N. Gower and wife Rita, Bunker Hill, W.Va. A private service will be held at Restlawn Memorial Gardens. The Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., Cumberland, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Margaret Izetta Zimmerman, 59, wife of Samuel Franklin Zimmermam, died yesterday, afternoon at her home, 55 Blocher Street, Ridgely. Mrs. Aimmerman was a native of Long Hollow, Md. Her parents were the late Espy L. and Margaret Ellen (Wise) Steckman. Besides her husband, she leaves three childre, Robert Lee Zimmerman, Mrs. J. A. Wolfe and Mrs. Ellen Ruby, all of Ridgeley; a brother, Eugene J. Steckman, Oldtown; four sisters, Mrs. Catherine Zimmerman, Oldtown; Mrs. Marie Snively, Keedysville; Mrs. Bessie haines, Augusta, W. Va., and Mrs. Laura Bloss, North Branch, and 12 grandchildren. Services will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. from Assembly of God CHurch, Wallace Street, by Rev. Frank Fratto. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Mary Louise Zimmerman of Hopewell township, died April 6, 1931. She was born October 20, 1848, the daughter of Eliza Atkinson Bowers and George Bowers. She was the widow of George H. Zimmers. [?] Surviving are the following children: Samuel and Charles of Hopewell, James H., Harrison and Robert R. of Yellow Creek, Mrs. E. M. Smouse of Waynesburg, Mary M. of Amherst, Massachusetts, Laverna M. at home, John M. of Everett, and B. Frank of Martinsburg. She is also survived by one brother, Albert Bowers of Pittsburgh, and one sister, Mrs. Eli Fluke of Harrisburg. Mrs. Zimmerman was a member of the Brethren Church. The funeral took place at the Reformed Church at Yellow Creek on Wednesday, with interment in the adjoining Church cemetery.

Millard E. Zimmerman, 76, of Star Route 4, Everett; died Sunday, June 20, 1982, in Donahoe Manor Nursing Home, Bedford. He was born in Hopewell Townsihp, May 26, 1906, a son of the late Robert R. and Elsie (Fluke) Zimmerman. He was married to Oleta M. Hook who survives along with the following children: Marcus W., married to Angela Davis, of Orange, Texas; Gail L., wife of Robert Alewine, of Chesapeake, Va.; and Robert E., married to Jeannie Mills, and Richard A., married to Annabelle Hedrick, both of Star Route, Everett. Eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive along with the following brothers and sisters, George, married to Dolly Whysong, of Orlando Fla.; Warren, married to Helen Sparks, of Edwardsville, Ill.; Mrs. Helen Koontz, of Woodbury; Vivian, wife of Ray Eller, of Hopewell; and Mary Ellen, wife of Max Fluke, of Alaska. Six brothers and one sister preceded him in death. Mr. Zimmerman was of the Grace Brethren faith, member of the Chaneysville volunteer Fire Company, and the PSEA. He attained his college credits from Millersville, Shippensburg, and Penn State, and was a school teacher for 40 years, having taught in Hopewell, Broat Top, East and West Providence Township, and for 13 years was head teacher at Chaneysville Elementary School, retiring in May 1968. Funeral services: Wednesday, June 23, at 2 p.m. at the Robert H. Chamberlain Funeral Home in Everett, with Rev. Charles Perrin and Rev. Homer Lingenfelter officiating. Burial in Fairview Cemetery.

Robert R. Zimmerman, 82, of Hopewell Township, Bedford County, died at 9 a.m. Monday, May 19, 1969, at his home. Funeral services are being held at 2 p.m. today at the Masood Funeral Chapel, Saxton, by the Rev. Robert Sunderland. Burial will be in Yellow Creek Reformed Cemetery. He was born in Hopewell Township, Oct. 17, 1886, a son of George and Mary (Bowers) Zimmerman, and married Elsie B. Fluke, who preceded him in death. Mr. Zimmerman taught school in Bedford County for 24 years and was a carpenter by trade. He was a member of the Yellow Creek Church of the Brethren. Surviving are six children, Mrs. Hugh Koontz of Woodbury, Millard of Everett RD, George of Orlando, Fla., Mrs. Ray Eller of Hopewell RD, Warren of Edwardsville, Ill., and Mrs. Max Fluke of Warsaw, Ind.; 22 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and two brothers and a sister, Charles of Hopewell RD 1, Mary of Middletown, N.Y., and John of Everett RD 2.

Samuel E. Zimmerman, Sr. died Sunday, Dec 23 at 1:30 a.m. at his home in Hopewell. He was born October 12, 1869 in Yellow Creek, Pa., a son of George and Mary (Bowers) Zimmerman, now deceased. He was united in marriage in 1897 with Virginia Cogan, who died in 1904. He was later united in marriage with Gladys Miller on Feb. 21, 1912, who survives with the following children: Samuel Jr., Hopewell, Pa.; John F., Syracuse, N. Y.; Mrs. Elizabeth Watson, Hopewell, Pa.; Mrs. Isabel Truax, Eddystone, Pa.; George C., Hopewell, Pa.; Anna May, Everett; James H., Janet L., Joyce and Richard W., all of Hopewell. Four grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters survive: Harrison Zimmerman and James Zimmerman, Yellow Creek; John Zimmerman, Everett; Charles ZImmerman, Hopewell; Benjamin F. Zimmerman, Roaring Spring; Robert Zimmerman, Hopewell; Mrs. Edgar Smouse, Costa Mesa, Calif.; Laverna and Mary Zimmerman, of Middletonw, N. Y. FUneral services were conducted at the home on Wednesday, Dec. 26 at 2 o'clock and interment was in the Steele Cemetery at Yellow Creek.

He was born in Hopewell Township, on October 12, 1869, the son of George and Mary (Bowers) Zimmerman. He was twice married. His first wife, Virginia Cogan Zimmerman, preceded him in death. His second wife, Mrs. Gladys Miller Zimmerman survives. Also surviving are these sons and daughters: Samuel E. Zimmerman, Jr., Mrs. John Watson, Hopewell; James Zimmerman, Hopewell; Mrs. Clyde Truax, Eddystone; John T. Zimmerman, Syracuse, N. Y.; George C. ZINN, John

MEYERSDALE, Nov. 19 — John Zinn, 62 years old, of this city, was found dead in his automobile in his garage on Tuesday morning, death being attributed to apoplexy, although an inquest was to be conducted late today by Dr. Kimmel, Somerset county coroner, in an effort to determine whether carbon monoxide might have been the cause. The body of Mr. Zinn was found by his wife, who became alarmed after her husband had failed to return home after stating that he was going to the garage Monday night to work on the car. Mrs. Zinn found the garage doors open and the lights of the car still burning and then discovered her husband's lifeless form on the front seat of the machine. His face was badly swollen which was thought to be an indication that he had died from a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. Zinn was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Zinn and was born in Mt. Savage, Md. He came to Meyersdale with his parents when two years old and had resided here practically all his life. He taught school when a young man and was employed by the B. & O. railroad in a clerical position for several years. For seven years he had charge of a store for the Quemahoning Coal Company at Stoyestown. For the last two years Mr. Zinn and his wife had made their home with the latter's mother, Mrs. Henry Khus, North Street. The deceased leaves his widow and two sisters, Mrs. Frank Woy, of Somerset, and Mrs. Emma Ridinger of Pittsburg. The funeral will be held Thursday at 4 o'clock with services at the late residence, in charge of Rev. J. Luther Frantz, pastor of the local Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Union cemetery.

MEYERSDALE, Pa. - Mrs. Lillie Zinn, 80, died yesterday at her home, RD 2, Meyersdale. A lifelong resident of Meyersdale, she was a daughter of the late Conrad and Elizabeth (Smith) Werner and was the widow of Milton Zinn. She is survived by five children, Mrs.Viola Robertson and William W. Zinn, both of RD 2, Meyersdale; Mrs. Harry Robertson, Boynton; Mrs. Harold Deen, Dundalk, Md., and Mrs. John Nicholson, Springdale; a brother, George Werner, of here; a sister, Mrs. Samuel Pritts, Garrett; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. The body is at the Price Funeral Home where a service will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p. m. Rev. L. Collins Defibaugh will officiate and burial will be in Meyersdale Reformed Cemetery.

HARRISONBURG VA -  Lockjaw brought on by a splinter in his hand caused the death Saturday night of Edgar L. Zirkle, 55 years old, a merchant, at New Market, Shenandoah county. Recently, Mr. Zirkle was fishing in the county, and while handling the fishing pole ran a big splinter into his hand. From this injury, tetanus developed, proving fatal. Mr. Zirkle was widely known as a collector of war relics. He is survived by his widow, who was Miss Larrick of Middletown, Frederick Co., and four children, Mrs. Irdine Lincoln of Pittsburg; John, Larrick, and Robert.

DIES OF LOCKJAW
New Market Va, Nov 5 -
Edgar Zirkle, aged 55, a prominent merchant and telephone manager of New Market, Va., while fishing ran a splinter in his hand which resulted in lockjaw and death. Mr. Zirkle weighed 300 pounds. Many knew him as a famous collector of war relics, which he recently sold for $1,000. His funeral took place today at 10 o'clock from the Lutheran Church of which he was a prominent member.

Little Orleans - Mrs. Etta Zirkle, 68, wife of Miller E. Zirkle, died yesterday in Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland. Born at Big Pool, she was a daughter of the late William E. and Annie E. (French) Hart.  Mrs. Zirkle was a member of Orchard Ridge Church of God. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Anna F. Benfield, Big Pool, and Mrs. Lorraine McCusker, Little Orleans;; a son Wayne Zirkle, Amaranth, Pa.; five sisters, Mrs. Bessie Turner, Mrs. Elsie Heiston and Mrs. Kathryn Reed, all of Big Pool; Mrs. Carrier Moore, Hedgesville, W.  Va. and Mrs. Mamie Weller, Hancock; 16 granchildren and six great-grandchildren. Stanford "Stan" W. Zollner, 84, LaVale, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. Born Aug. 6, 1926, in Cumberland, he was a son of the late James Zollner and Gladys (Rinker) Appel. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Lois May (Hager) Zollner; three brothers, Harry Appel, Joey Appel, and Edgar Zollner; and two sisters, Elizabeth Robinette and Gladys Jean Appel. Stan was a 1945 graduate of Fort Hill High School. While in high school, he worked at the B&O Railroad and delivered groceries. He began his automotive career at Streets Auto Body, which was later A&B Auto Body. Stan decided to go into business for himself. He owned and operated Stan’s Auto Body for 30 years. The business is still being operated today by his son, Chris. Stan was a 50-year member of Potomac Lodge #100, AF&AM; Salem Chapter #18, RAM; Antioch Commandery #6, Knights Templar; Ali Ghan Shrine, where he was a member and past president of the Motor Corps Unit; Cumberland Court #117, ROJ; and Algonquin Forest #140, Tall Cedars of Lebanon. He belonged to St. John's Lutheran Church and was a volunteer at the Interfaith Community Pantry. He is survived by his wife, Martha Lee Zollner; two children, Michelle Zollner Bartholomew and husband James, Cumberland, and S. Christopher Zollner, and wife Erna, Keyser, W.Va.; two stepsons, Robert J. Martin Jr., and wife Bonnie, Cumberland, and Larry R. Martin, and wife Peggy, Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, Paul Appel and Robert Appel, both of Cumberland; six sisters, Nancy Musgrove, Gaithersburg, Margie Humbertson, Cumberland, Carolyn Wyer, Moorefield, W.Va., Patricia Clark, Cumberland, Sandra Brooks, Dundalk, and Vera Diehl, Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren Shane Zollner, Leslie Wigfield and husband Ryan, Michael Bartholomew, Stacey Becker, Brian Martin, Tiffany Knaul, Jennifer Martin, and Jaime Waterfield; great-grandchildren Ryder Wigfield, Emily and Carter Knaul, Grace and Cooper Martin, Davis and Austin Waterfield, and Andrew Becker; sisters-in-law Mary Dormio and Rosemarie Layman; brother-in-law James Hager; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service was conducted at St. John's Lutheran Church, Cumberland, today, Thursday, Oct. 7, with the Rev. Charles Erzkus officiating. Interment was held in Rose Hill Cemetery. Loving family and friends served as active and honorary pallbearers. Daisy D. Zufall, 94, of Penn Hills, formerly of Harnedsville, died Thursday, Aug. 9 at Penn Hills. Born March 6, 1879 at Glencoe, daughter of John and Sarah Meyers Shumaker, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ina Russ of Penn Hills and Mrs. Owen Clink of Rockwood; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She was postmistress of Harnedsville for many years.

ZUFALL, George B., Sr.

George B. Zufall Sr., 75, of Belvedere Avenue, Baltimore, formerly of Cumberland, died July 21 in Sinai Hospital, Baltimore. Born in Red Bank, Pa., on Jan. 16, 1906, he was the son of the late David A. and Lena (Della) Zufall. Surviving are two sons, Robert B. Zufall, Baltimore, and George B. Zufall Jr., Cumberland; four daughters, Patricia L.Talieferro and Elvira J. Zufall, both of Baltimore; Mary D. Swanger, Lock Haven, Pa., and Secreta M. O'Donnell, Cumberland; 24 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A service was held at the Eline Funeral Home, Reisterstown, and interment was in All Saints Cemetery, Reisterstown.
