George Maxwell Crow(e) was the son of Frederick and Henrietta Staup Crow(e), born 23 July 1841 in Frostburg, MD. He married twice, first to Mary Ellen Crowe, a cousin, on November 9, 1866, then after her death, to Agnes W. Smith on 22 July 1882. Mary Ellen was the daughter of George W. and Mary Porter Crowe, and sister to Henry Crow. After the death of Henry and his wife, Margaret E. Smith, Mary Ellen and George Maxwell took their three boys to raise. Their sons were: Sylvester Porter, George Washington, & John Smith Crowe.

George Maxwell Crow applied for Henry's Army pension for the support of Henry and Margaret's three sons on October 8, 1879 since the boys were all under 16 years of age and he was the only legal guardian of the boys.
George Maxwell Crow was granted guardianship of the three boys by the Allegany County Orphans Court on August 2, 1881 and signed by the Register of Wills.
George Maxwell Crow served in the Union Army in the Civil War, 2nd Regiment of the Potomac Brigade of the MD Home Guard, Company C.
He died on 2 February 1916 and was buried in the Allegany Cemetery [Frostburg Memorial] on 4 February 1916.
