Charles COPPER was born in 1740, died in 1803 at age 63, and was buried in Hynson's Chapel.
General Notes: Charles Copper was born and raised on the family farm "Lord's Gift" in Lower Langford Bay area. His father's brother, Charles, died in 1775 and left 261 acres of "Lord's Gift" and "William's Lot" to Charles. It was located on the old post road coming out of Piney Neck and NW side of the road leaing Rock Hall. Charles raised his family there. In June, 1775 he took the Oath of Allegiance in Kent Co. and was in the Revoutionary War. He married about 1780. In the 1783 Tax List he was living on the "Lord's Gift" and "William's Lot", owned 14 slaves, 7 horses, 23 black cattle, and 2 pigs. In 1790 he only had 7 slaves. In 1797 Charles had the "Lords's Gift" and "William's Lot" resurveyed for the purpose of devising the lands in his will, which he wrote in 1798. In his will he mentioned that he had purhased ¼ acre of land at the graveyard for the family burial place. In his Administrative Accounting, this payment was made to Hynson Chapel, which was at the corner of Rt. 298 and Ricauds Branch Road. It was built in 1774.
Charles was a farmer, raising the following: wheat, flax, cotton, corn, straw, hay and popatoes. He had hogs, shoats (young pigs), horses, sheep, oxen, cows and several bee hives. His children were minors when he died and were left in the care of their mother, Ann. They continued to live on the farm. The youngest son, Cyrus, is not mentioned in the will, although all of his siblings are. This would indicate Cyrus was born after the will was written in 1798 but before 1800 when he is enumerated on the census.
Charles' eldest son, William Copper was the one who got most of the land and he left it to his nephew Cyrus Copper, whom he raised. William was instrumental in founding several Methodist Churches in the area. Ann was still living in 1810.

Unconscious on Platform
Mr. W. J. Copper, A Former Baltimorean, Dies In Philadelphia.
While waiting for a train at the Germantown Station, Philadelphia, Mr. William J. Copper, 47? years old, a brakeman on the Reading railroad and formerly a Baltimorean, fell unconscous on the platform.
A train was rapidly rounding the curve leading to the station when Mr. Copper fell, and had it not been for a policeman he would have fallen on the tracks. An ambulance was summoned and the unconscious man was hurried to the Germantown hospital, where he died a short time later.
The coroner's physician, Dr. Wadsworth, performed an autopsy and found traces of poison in Mr. Copper's stomach. The police believe that he had ptomaine poisoning. Dr. Wadsworth held an inquest yesterday.
