GEIGER, Ephraim
Larimer township lost one of her most respected citizens on Wednesday, December 17, when Ephraim Geiger passed away. He had been seriously sick for only a few days, and the news od his death came as a sad surprise to his many friends. He had, however, not been quite as well as usual for some length of time but yet this fact was hardly known to most people who knew him well. Mr. Geiger was born on the farm adjoining the one on which he and his wife spent the 32 years of their married life, on August 9th 1859, he thus being aged 60 years, 4 months and 8 days at the time of his death. He was confirmed in the White Oak Lutheran church, June 10, 1876, and continued throughout all these years a most faithful and loyal member of his church. He was interested in all her work, very regular in attendance upon all her services, and served in an official capacity for many years - serving as trustee at the time of his death. Needless to say he is missed in the work of the church. On March 31st, 1887, he married Miss Mary Dietle of Greenville, to which union one son was born, who preceded him in death on Oct. 1st, 1912. Besides his widow and Miss Margaret Christner, a niece who has lived with them for several years, he leaves two sisters, Lucinda Geiger, of Meyersdale, and Mrs. Mary Korns, of Southampton township. A large number of other relatives and a host of friends hold the memory of his irreproachable life as a rich heritage. Funeral services, conducted at the White Oak Lutheran church by his pastor Rev. Charles Lambert of Salisbury, on Friday afternoon, were largely attended.
[obituary is hand dated, December 25, 1919; no newspaper name is discernible; Ephraim is the son of William Aaron Geiger and Lavina Bowman]

GEIGER, John William
Death has hurled his shaft and hit a shining mark. Ephraim Geiger and wife were overwhelmed with grief, and the community of the White Oak churches was shocked, when it became known that John William Geiger, a young man of fine spirit and great promise, had finished his earthly career. When midnight hour's had struck on Tuesday, that fine spirit which tenanted that young body had taken its homeward flight. The young man complained of headache on Friday night a week ago. On the following Sunday the family physician was called, who saw symptoms of typhoid fever. He prescribed for him, and later Dr. Rowe of Meyersdale was also called. The patient grew gradually worse, however, until the end came. John William Geiger was born November 16th, 1889, and died October 1st, 1912, aged 22 years, 10 months and 15 days. He was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Ephraim Geiger. The respect in which the young man was held and the sympathy of the community for the bereaved parents were attested in the unusually large funeral concourse. Seldom have more people attended the last sad rites than of John Geiger. He united in his youth with the Lutheran church. His pastor, Rev. E. S. Johnson, paid a fitting tribute to his memory and spoke words of great comfort to the sorrowing parents. Rev. C. Mankamyer and Rev. Bender assisted in this service.

FORMER CONNELLSVILLE MAN SLAIN IN PITTSBURGH: HOLD WOMAN IN FATAL SHOOTING
William A. Geiger, 50, formerly of Connellsville, was shot to death Wednesday afternoon in a woman friend's third-floor apartment at 1805 East Carson St., in Pittsburgh's South Side. Catherine Haas, 40, also known as Kay Russman, was arrested by police at 8 p.m. Wednesday and charged with Geiger's murder.
GEIGER, William A. (followup)
According to Pittsburgh police, a woman identifying herself as Catherine Hart, called the communications department saying, "I just shot him." On arrival at the apartment, police reported finding Geiger's fully clothed body lying near a turned off television set, and the apartment was not in disorder, police added. Geiger was shot once through the left chest. Police said Geiger, a taxi driver in Pittsburgh, lived at the apartment but also maintained an address at 308 Lea St., Munhall. United Press International in Pittsburgh said Yellow Cab employment files there showed Geiger was born in Connellsville and gave his age as 50. Pittsburgh police reports said Geiger was married, but had been separated from his wife for approximately three years. Geiger was once employed as a prison guard in Philadelphia during the 1940s, according to Chief of Police Mr. Sandusky, who said he and the slain man once went to Philadelphia together looking for work during the 1930s. Geiger was also remembered by other local police as being a house painter here for several years. He was born Dec.17, 1906, a son of the late Henry and Christina Bartholomal Geiger. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Anna Elliott Geiger, three daughters, Mrs. Larry (Janet) Phillips of Carnegie, and Anna Marie and Mary Louise at home; three sons, William A. with the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam, and Henry and Paul at home; one grandson; two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Gertrude) Maffitt, of Greensburg, and Henrietta Geiger of Connellsville; and three brothers, Bernard of Connellsville, Lawrence of Cumberland, Md., and Charles of Danville, Va. His mother died in January 1964. The body was taken to the Green funeral home, Main St., Munhal.

PITTSBURGH (UPI) —"You killed him!" cried John Geiger. His comment shattered the emotional scene Friday between his mother, Mrs. Ann Geiger, and Catherine Haas, the 40-year-old woman accused of killing his father. Police said Mrs. Haas and the dead man, William Geiger, had been keeping company intermittently for three years. Geiger, 51, was found dead of a shotgun blast Feb. 8 in Mrs. Haas' third floor apartment. Lawrence E. Geiger, of 804 Tanpley Avenue, Cumberland, is a brother of the victim. The dramatic confrontation between the victim's wife and Mrs. Haas occurred at a coroner's hearing before Chief Deputy Coroner Louis Hamel. As Mrs. Haas was led from the hearing room, she extended her hand to Mrs. Geiger. The wife grasped her hand and the two clutched each other until John Geiger interrupted. Homicide detective Stephen Tercsak said a .25 caliber automatic was found under pillows in Mrs. Hass' sofa.

PITTSBURGH. (AP) - A Pittsburgh woman was convicted of involuntary manslaughter Wednesday in the shooting of a man in her south side apartment Feb. 8. The jury of six men and six women returned the verdict against Miss Catherine Haas, 40, in Allegheny County Court. The prosecution had asked for a second degree murder verdict, but Miss Haas' attorney contended the pistol in her hand went off accidentally when the victim, William A. Geiger, 51, of suburban Munhall, and formerly of Cumberland, Md., grabbed Miss Haas' wrist. Judge Edwin M. Clark deferred sentencing.

W. Virginia Woman Dies From Burns ~ Keyser Resident Fell Asleep While Smoking Cigaret
A 61-year-old Mineral county woman suffered fatal burns late last night when she apparently fell asleep while smoking a cigaret in bed, causing the mattress to ignite. Mrs. Mary Katherine Gerard, wife of I. N. Gerard, 118 D Street, Keyser, died today at 9:30 a.m. in Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser. She was burned about the entire body. The victim had been in ill health for some time, and a physician reportedly visited her during the evening. The fire was discovered about midnight. Members of the Keyser Volunteer Fire Company went to the scene and confined flames to the upstairs of the two-story frame house. The burning mattress was tossed from a window and the fire was quickly brought under control. Damage was not too extensive. Neighbors confirmed the report that the victim's husband, a retired B&O worker, said she went to bed with a lighted cigaret. No autopsy was performed. Born at Upper Tract, W. Va., Mrs. Gerard was a daughter of Nicholas and Mahulda (Hoover) Hartman. The body is at Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser, where services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. Interment will take place in Queen's Point Cemetery.

GERLACH, Jacob William
(also HAMILL, W.E. and FALLON, Martin J.)
There was a bad freight wreck near Rowlesburg, W. Va., at a very early hour yesterday morning, an extra freight colliding with fast freight No. 97, which was just pulling into Rowlesburg. There were three persons killed, one of whom, Jacob William Gerlach, aged 30, a brakeman, belonged to Cumberland. The other two were W. E. Hamill, 24, brakeman, Keyser, W. Va., and Martin J. Fallon, engineer, who it is supposed to have been killed, as he is missing, and his body is presumed to be under the wreckage. He lived at Piedmont, W. Va., and is 40 years old. He was last seen on the running board of his engine, about two miles east of the point of the collision. The train was then making lightning speed and was beyond the control of the crew. If he jumped, he may have landed in the creek, which borders the railroad at that point. If he escaped he may be lying injured at some isolated point. The accident was due to an extra freight drawn by engine 1843 in charge of Conductor S. M. Bartlett of Keyser and Engineer M. J. Fallon, of Piedmont. The train was picked up at Piedmont. It contained 11 loads of coal and several other cars of merchandise. They left Piedmont at 2:18 Sunday morning, when the train reached the summit of Cranberry grade the fireman states that the air was tried on the engine and found to be in good working order. While the train was going down the grade, the engineer blew for the signal at Rodamer and received a clear block at McMillian. As they passed, the train got beyond control. Fifth 97 westbound had just cleared McMillian when the extra train crashed into the rear of 97. Upon striking the front, freight cars were hurled in all directions. Fourteen cars were thrown into the creek. Eleven were steel cars loaded with coal, one contained apples, and one empty. The caboose also went over. All three tracks were blocked, but a siding track was opened in two hours. In rapid succession, the other tracks were opened. The debris had not all been cleared late last night. Division Superintendent F. B Blaser, who went to the scene of the wreck, said the property damage would amount to $2,500 and the damage to freight, $350. The bodies of both Hamill and Gerlach were taken from under the wreckage. Gerlach's body was brought to his home on Knobley street, this city, yesterday evening. He leaves a wife and two small children. He was a son of Jacob Gerlach of Cumberland. At one time Mr. Gerlach engaged at the printing trade in this city. All the tracks were opened bv noon yesterday. Eight empties and the caboose of the runaway train were not thrown over the embankment. No one on the front train was killed. The two brakemen of the rear train lost their lives while out on the train trying to stop it. Had they been back in the caboose where it is customary for brakemen to ride, they would not have been killed. That Engineer Fallon was trying desperately to save his train was shown, when after having gone four miles in the wild flight he blew for the block at Rodamer and answered when it was given him. He, however, ran past the block and it is thought had hoped to reach a level stretch of a mile and would stop in striking an incline. Engineer Fallon was well known in Cumberland, where he had many friends. He often visited this city. There were many expressions of sympathy yesterday for the families of the men whose lives went out while heroically in pursuit of duty. Mr. Gerlach's funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from Zion Reformed church, North Liberty street.

GERONE, Octavo
HATFIELD, Elias & Troy Elias Hatfield, age 40, and Troy Hatfield, aged 36, brothers, and Octavo Gerone, an Italian, were almost instantly killed at Harewood, near Montgomery, Tuesday afternoon, in a pistol duel, resulting from a despute over the division of saloon territory in Fayette county. The Hatfields were sons of "Devil" Anse Hatfield, formerly leader of the West Virginia faction in the noted Hatfield-McCoy feud, which was waged for a dozen of years along the West Virginia border. The two Hatfields owned a saloon at Boomer, and in issuing saloon licenses in Fayette county it is understood that saloonists shall not live outside a restricted territory. Gerone was employed by Carl Hansau, who owned a saloon at Dannelton, two miles from Boomer, and Gerone was said to have been infringing on the Hatfield territory.
