PAINTER, Mrs. Margaret Lilly
The body of Nov. 4 flood victim Margaret Lilly Painter, 29, of Elkins, W.Va., was discovered in Grant County Friday, a few hundred yards south of the tree from which her husband William Painter was rescued by a Department of Natural Resources helicopter on the morning of Nov. 5. Charles T. Agnew, dozer operator with Sites Excavation of Petersburg, was working in Kiles Field a mile east of the Cabins Post Office, at approximately 2:25 p.m. Friday, June 27, when he discoverd the body, buried under three to four feet of silt and sand, some 235 days after the devastating flood that struck West Virginia last November. The body, the 12th found in Grant County, was recovered by the Grant County Sheriff’s Department with the assistance of Agnew and James Webster, also a dozer operator with Sites. It was Webster who discovered the body of flood victim Maurice Funk on Feb. 10. Mrs. Painter was identified through dental records provided by Dr. John Raese, Elkins, in cooperation with Grant County Medical Examiner John Glover. The body was taken to the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg and a private service was held Monday in Elkins. On Nov. 4, 1985, Mrs. Painter and her husband were returning from a marathon race in Washington, D.C., when they were trapped along the highway in Grant County by rapidly rising water. The couple was able to take shelter in a house near Jordan’s Run but the structure began to break up and the Painters escaped to the roof, which was swept downstream with the flood waters. 'The roof eventually capsized and threw them both into the rising waters of the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River. The couple became separated in the flood waters and Bill Painter was able to swim safely to a tree and was rescued the following morning by helicopter.

PARIS, William R.
Tues of this week word reached here of the death of Mr William R Paris, one of Mineral County's best and most honored citizens. Mr Paris was born near New Creek, Sept 20, 1837, and lived in that section of the county during his entire life. He was one of the most industrious and energetic men of our county. His farm was well nigh a model. He was a man of remarkable health and vitality until about five years ago, when his health gave way as the result of overwork. The world owes a great deal to such men - men who develop our resources and bring things to pass- men who make the desert to blossom as the rose. Mr Paris was one of the class of our citizens that make our country great. He was a man who laid great emphasis upon duty and honor. On last Sun, he was taken very ill and sank rapidly until death ended his suffering at 10 pm Mon, July 10, 1911, having attained the age of 73 years, 9 months and 20 days. Mr Paris was a member of the M E Church. He was a Union Soldier during the Civil War, being a private in Company C, Third Regiment, Md Volunteer Infantry. Mr Paris was twice married. His first wife was Miss Eliza Arnold of New Creek and the second, Miss Annie C Michael, of near Greenland Gap. He is survived by a wife and six children. The children are: Mrs George Eagle, near Keyser and Misses Louise, Alma Doris and May and Master Hunter Paris, all at home. Seven children preceded him to the spirit world. The funeral services were held at his home on New Creek, four miles above Keyser. Thurs afternoon, conducted by Rev J A Haugh, of Hillsboro, Va. The body was buried at Queens Point Cemetery. The pall bearers were selected from New Creek Post G, A R of which Mr Paris was a member; they were J W Virts, W T Connell, Walter Lowery, F L Kimmell, D P Osborn, G M Miers.

PARISH, Mrs. Amanda
Mrs. C. H. Parish, whom we mentioned last week as being very ill from eating poisoned meat, died on Monday, June 24, 1912, after suffering intensely. It seems that the whole family were sick from the poison, but all recovered except Mrs. Parish. She was about 58 years of age, and leaves a husband, three children, Mrs. Lucy Fazenbaker of Bloomington, Mrs. Beulah Smith and Charles, also one sister, Mrs. Robert Caldwell, and two brothers, Allen Barker of Grafton, and Charles Barker of Georgia. The funeral took place Wednesday. Services held at her late home, on Limestone, conducted by Rev. S. Umstot, after which interment took place in Queen’s Point cemetery. The funeral was largely attended. A special choir consisting of Mrs. H. M. Wells, Misses Emlie Coffroth and Myrtle Vossler, Messrs. D. T. Greenwade and George Loy sang appropriate music.

PARK, John Albert
In loving but sad remembrance of our dear Uncle, John Park, formerly of Lonaconing, who died Friday, August 19, 1910, at his home in Breedlove. West Virginia.
In West Virginia the stars are beaming
Upon our dear Uncle’s grave.
Where sleepeth without dreaming
Our dear Uncle we could not save.
The last farewell was spoken
A few days before to-day.
And the family circle broken
When our dear Uncle passed away.
O, the memory of that morning,
As we stood with aching hearts,
Seeing the one we loved so dearly
Pierced by death's most cruel darts.
O, Uncle, dear, we loved you so!
How sad it was to part!
One dear thought of your sweet face
Will cause the tears to start!
It was a bright summer day
That we laid his body to rest
In the cold and clammy clay,
And O, may his soul be blest!
He sleeps within the cold, cold clay,
The dark-blue skies above him;
His heart was noble, true and brave
None knew him but to love him.
Friends may think we’ll soon forget
And our wounded hearts be healed,
But they little know of the sorrow
That is in our hearts concealed.
As long as memory lasts I will remember . him.
His Niece,
Bessie B. Kirby

PATRICK, Marcus Anderson
Biography of Mr. M. A. Patrick
The following sketch of M. A. Patrick, late president of the First National Bank, had been compiled by The National Cyclopedia of America Biography and will be published in the near future. Mr. Patrick's death occurred just two years ago Tuesday last, May 20, and it is fitting that this biography be published at this time in his memory. Marcus Anderson Patrick, banker, was born at Franklin, Allegany County, Md., Sept. 4, 1866, son of Andrew and Charlotte Anne (Fazenbaker) Patrick. His father, a native of Nova Scotia, served as a private in the Second Maryland regiment in the Civil War. His grandfather, Brody Patrick, emigrated from Ayreshire, Scotland, to Nova Scotia, settling with his wife Elizabeth Muir Anderson, near Halifax, in 1832. Andrew Patrick, our subject's father, was a coal miner and settled in Pennsylvania in 1848, moving thence to Franklin, Md., about 1853. The son was educated in the public schools of his native town, and at the age of fourteen became a clerk in the grocery store of J. S. Jamesson, at Westernport, Md. In March 1889, he entered the First National Bank of Piedmont, W. Va., as a bookkeeper, was elected cashier in May 1891, and at the death of J. S. Jamesson in 1904 was elected president and held the position until the close of his life. He was president of the First National Bank, of Lonaconing, Md.; vice-president of the First National Bank, of Gormania, W. Va., and president of the Piedmont (W. Va.) Wholesale Grocery. He was a member of the American Banker's Association, the West Virginia Bankers' Association, and was a Royal Arch Mason. During 1908-1917 he served as trustee of the Westernport public schools. He was a local preacher of the Methodist Episcopal church, South, was superintendent of the Sunday School, and a trustee and steward. His chief recreation was motoring and walking, his favorite pursuit was religious work. Mr. Patrick was conservative in nature, was genial in temperament, and honest in character; he was an earnest friend of the poor. He was twice married: (1) May 4, 1889, to Josephine, daughter of Benjamin Grayson, farmer of Antioch, Mineral county, W. Va., she died April 2, 1890 and he married (2) at Kearney, Md., Nov. 26, 1892, to Jessie L. Grayson, sister of his first wife. There were no childdren from his first marriage]. His children are: Florian Anderson, manager and bookkeeper; Julian Grayson, chemical engineer; Lola Josephine; Forrest DeEste; Catherine Charlotte and Charles Robert Patrick. Mr. Patrick was found dead in the Chesapeake & Ohio canal at Cumberland, Md., May 20, 1917, thought to be the victim of foul play.

PATRICK, William Brodie
Sad is the fate of poor William Patrick. After weeks of enforced idleness, he went back to the mine only to meet his death. With both legs broken and an artery severed there was no chance of recovery. He lived in agony 18 hours and passed away yesterday morning at 6:20. William Patrick was about 31 years of age, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Patrick of Watercliffe. He is survived by his parents, three sisters - Mrs. John Zais of Westernport and Misses Bessie and Dollie Patrick - and two brothers - Clarence and Harry. The Patricks are long residents of Lonaconing and are among its best people. The funeral will take place tomorrow at 2 o'clock, and Garrison 109, Army and Navy Union, will furnish an escort. The dead soldier was not a member of the garrison, but was always ready to turn out with the garrison and served on the firing squad on several occasions. He had filed his application for membership and would have been initiated at the next meeting of the garrison. The remains are lying at the residence of the parents on Watercliffe, dressed in the uniform of an artillery man and covered with the flag of his country.

PATTISON, Charles
Lonaconing, Md., Oct. 16.
Charles Patterson(sic-Pattison), who was so badly injured by being run over by a train on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in the Grafton yards yesterday from which he died soon, was well known to the people of this community where he bore a splendid reputation. The body was brought to Lonaconing this morning and taken to his late home on Robins street, from where the funeral will take place probably tomorrow. Mr. Pattison was prostically a young man and his sudden and tragic death has cast a gloom of sadness over the entire community. Both legs were cut off and other injuries sustained which would have made him a helpless cripple had he survived the shock. His widow who is left with several children, will have the sympathy of all our people in the hour of her great sorrow and affliction. NB: the correct spelling is Pattison.

PATTON, Aleck/Alex
Mr. Aleck Patton of Mt Savage, a fireman on the C&P RR was run over by his own engine at Cherry Run last Saturday. He was sent home and died from his injuries Sunday. He slipped and was thrown under the locomotive which ran over his legs, mashing them at the ankles. Patton was an industrious man esteemed by all who knew him. Three years ago, his wife died leaving in his care, three little children.
The remains of Mr Alex Patton who was hurt on the B&O railroad Saturday and died from his injuries in Mt Savage, Sunday, was brought to his mother's home on Monday. PAVELICK, Nick & Son (also George HOOK & son)
DUBOIS PA July 17 - The bodies of 21 victims of the mine explosion were taken form the workings at Sykesville today. The bodies were not burned or otherwise mutilated and it was evident that they died from after damp. G A Burrell, chemist of the bureau of mines car form Pittsburg, took a quantity of blood from the body of each victim and will examine it to determine the number killed by the explosion and the number by damp. It is believed the explosion was caused when some miner struck a pocket of gas and it exploded from the naked lamp.
The greatest mine disaster in this section of the country occurred last night at 9:30 o'clock in a shaft of the Cascade Coal and Coke Company at Sykesville, 9 miles south of Dubois, the lives of 21 miners being snuffed out almost instantly as the result of an explosion. Three sets of brothers and a father and son are included in the list of the dead. George and John Hook, brothers, were found clasped in each other's arms, as were also Nick Pavelick and his young son, aged 15 years. Nick Pavelick and his son were hurrying along together and, finding that death was inevitable, they embraced each other in a farewell and died while clasped together. The first intimation that the people on the surface had that an explosion had occurred was when the safety door on the fan blew open and the machinery began to run wild. It was immediately surmised that something was radically wrong in the shaft, but the extent of the disaster was not known until 11 o'clock last night, when the rescuers entered the mine.
