  • FASHION ERAS

    Period Fashions from early 1800's to 20th century.  This site has information on the different styles of clothing worn, which may help in dating an old photo.     Contributor based information on Allegany County families.  Since Garrett Co. was once a part of Allegany Co., make sure you check both Allegany & Garrett Counties.  Many families also lived in both counties, at one time or another.

  • An ongoing project
    Somerset County Men and Women involved in the Civil War consisting of over 6000 names span.
  • CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS & SAILORS

    The (U.S.) National Parks Service website indexing the names of over 5.4 million Civil War Servicemen, who fought for the Union or the Confederacy.  You can search by name and location, etc. This is a work in progress and not all those who served have been indexed/listed.  

  • Family Search (LDS)

    One of the largest collections of family records in the world, provided by the Church of the Latter Day Saints (LDS). Data is added constantly by volunteers. You will find obits, vital records, wills/probate, member family trees and much more. This site and all the information is completely free, though links [i.e. Fold 3, Ancestry] off site, may charge a fee, to view actual document images.  

  • GARRETT CO ROOTSWEB

  • THE GODFREY LIBRARY

    This site has an online library for researching newspapers, etc. for a membership fee.

    Thousands of Ships' lists (manifests) transcribed to date.  Check back often with this ongoing project. 

  • MARYLAND DEATH INDEX

    State of Maryland's Vital Records Online. This site is frequently down and can be slow. Be patient and check back often. 

  • MARYLAND STATE ARCHIVES

    All kinds of records can be found here, from throughout the state of Maryland, dating back to the 17th century. 

  • Meyersdale Special Collection

    Obituaries from many local area newspapers.

  • Mineral Co. GenWeb

    You'll find lots of helpful information on the Mineral Co., W.Va. GenWeb site, including a vast collection of area newspaper articles which often cover Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia news and obituaries.  Patti McDonald has done a fantastic job with transcribing the papers.  You'll find sources for marriages, cemeteries and much more.  .

  • MT. SAVAGE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

    Beautiful pictures of Mt. Savage, then and now, along with lots of historical information for the area.  Many of our families lived in Mt. Savage.

  • VETERANS GRAVE LOCATOR
    US Department of Veterans Affairs ~ Locate burial sites for those buried in National Cemeteries throughout the United States.  Listings go back as far as the Civil War.
