The LAYMANS

"The LAYMANS of Allegany and Garrett Counties are probably of German descent.  George Bernhart Lanman arrived in Philadelphia Oct 27, 1738.  Benedict Lehman arrived in 1737 and other families of similar names came from Germany to America before the Revolution, settling in Pennsylvania.  George and Henry Layman are listed in the census of 1790 in Montgomery Co. PA.

George LAYMAN, (b.1790) the first known ancestor of our Laymans, is said to have been born in Staunton, VA.  [according to census records, he was born in Pennsylvania]. He settled near Westernport, where he was listed in the census of 1810 as head of a family of eight.  His children were Daniel, John, Catherine (m. John McCORMICK), George W., Henrietta, Nancy and James.

John LAYMAN of Allegany County, son of George, left a will which was probated July 21, 1845 in which he left to his wife, Nancy W. LAYMAN, their lot in Grantsville and "money in the bag", noted further on as $150 of 'specie in the bag', left to his wife and mother.  He mentioned also a Negro boy, Fill, to be free at 35 or sooner and suggests that the boy go to Africa.  To his brother, George W. Layman, he left the farm on which their parents resided.

George W. LAYMAN, son of George, was born in Maryland, as was his wife, Sarah (Sallie) McCORMACK, whom he married in 1832.  Their children were: Norman, Daniel B.[Boyer], Cordelia (m. MEARE), Mary (m. Frank McKENZIE), Henrietta (m. John McKENZIE), Francis, William, Amanda, John M.[sic], Virginia (m. Isaac SAWYER)[SAUGER], George, Minerva (m. Wm. CONNERS), Nancy (m. Jacob CARRY), John M.[sic] Layman (b. 1846 m. Anna R., daughter of George FACENBAKER).  He owned the Walnut Level Farm one mile SE of Frostburg [this is the Graham Farm and John was actually John Nelson Layman]."  

  JOHN NELSON LAYMAN

[NOTE: There are two George L. Laymans, George Lewis, born in 1850, the son of George Washington Layman, mentioned above, and George Louis, born in 1830, the son of Daniel Layman mentioned below.]

"Daniel LAYMAN, son of George, married Louisa DAYTON (m. Cumberland, 18 Nov 1825).  They resided in or near Westernport.  Their children were: John W. who lived and died at Grantsville; Mary Jane and Catherine Louisa who married the brothers John and Andrew BLOCHER; and George Louis.

GEORGE LOUIS LAYMAN married 1. Henrietta McKENZIE and 2. E. Sofora, daughter of John D. RENCH, who came from Hagerstown and kept the Steiner Hotel in Grantsville [this may now be the Casselman Inn].  George L. Layman operated the old TOMLINSON STONE HOUSE farm and inn, east of Grantsville.  Later he cleared a new farm below the Zion Church.  He was County Sheriff two years, 1869-1871.  In 1885 George moved to Cumberland where he died two years later and was buried in the Blocher farm graveyard.

By his first wife, George L. Layman had one son, Thomas H. and by his second wife, six sons and five daughters: Elwood, John D., Henrietta, Norval, George, Owen, Anna, Lloyd, Laura, Lee, and Harry.  His widow and all her children, except Henrietta, who married Ralph ENGLE of Mt. Nebo, all moved to Newell, Iowa."
